the quote you got from them sounds about right, when I had the timing belt done on my surf, it ran @1200, as I had a spare injector pump put in ( the original was leaking) , but they did the belts and everything

Belts and water pump are a 100km job, but, after that, it really should be all good for a long time. One thing I have found is that I've had to retension the belts after a while, but that's straightforward enough.

Well, I guess I should mention that the final bill for everything I had done, Injector Pump rebuild, complete timing belt kit with everything, new water pump and all related seals. Including the labour for all of this totalled $2,650.

Sorry if this has spelling mistakes riddled with poor grammar. I had to come home today and pour a couple of stiff drinks after tallying the bill......

Here's to a little maintenance free future......... At least for a little bit anyways....

Holy bankruptcy barman, that's a crazy amount of money. Only the injection pump rebuild is a specialized repair. Why is servicing of these things so expensive?

Holy hangover batman!!!! Yeah, it's a good chunk of change for sure. It was a fair amount of work, did all the preventative maintenance stuff while fixing the IP issue.

The problem I have here is that I live in Ontario and there's really no one here that has ever worked on one. When I got this thing, I went up to the local mitsubishi dealer to get a spare key. I didn't even get through the front door when every single person who worked there came out to look at the van awestruck. When the dust finally settled I asked them if they would work on it they said we can try but no guarantees and finding parts would be my problem. So I left not feeling confident in them and no key either.... :(

Volkswagen on the other hand was happy to accommodate. As I mentioned earlier, I have a buddy who's worked there for almost 40 years. Rising Sun happily emailed a manual to me that I printed and gave to him. He admitted it took him longer than it should have to do all this work but it was his first time on this vehicle.

But, it's home now in my driveway and its never run better. It should, in theory be good for a long while now. And my buddy said he be happy to work on more of these Delicas now he has some knowledge on them.

Still, why the fantastic hangover?? Because you're right, it was expensive and a few tasty beverages always seems to calm the pain...

My I/P rebuild cost me $900, including shipping to and from Amazing Auto Imports in Richmond BC, mind you I did the labor of removing and installing the pump after the rebuild, but that should be negligible for you given that 90% of that labor on your engine is removal of the timing belt. The timing belt job itself is a lot of labor since there are two separate belts that must be timed correctly to reduce vibration, and the seals although individually are not that big of a deal, multiply that by all the different seals on the front of that motor and it adds up very quickly.

It is still a very expensive job, but it's necessary maintenance, and the peace of mind that everything that you could do on the front of the motor has been done is worth a lot. It sucks to pay that much all at once, but hey, it's part of owning a kick ass unique vehicle

I guess everyone has to eat including mechanics, but this is why I encourage people to learn to do the work themselves; its really not difficult or complicated, and makes things much more affordable. Case in point: I picked up my van for $1500 because it needed a head. The owner had been quoted a price of $5000 for repair. It cost me about $700 and a few days work.

Yeah, totally true. I used to be afraid to pop the hood. But after owning 7 vintage VW camper busses, I got a little dirty.... And it feels great when you can do something yourself. I think this repair is a bit beyond my abilities so its big $$ for peace of mind and it really is peaceful:) just took it for a 2 hour spin to Toronto for a friends birthday and she ran sweeeeeeet!! And all the deisel was used to run the engin. Not pollute the ground below.. :)

HAH, after VW buses you're qualified to do the mars rover, as far as I'm concerned. If you have the patience and skills to keep those damn things running, you can fix anything. I cut my teeth on them as well, and from there expanded to my own vet surgery and dental work. If I ever need an appendix out I'm doing it myself.

That's classic!!! And it's perfectly true.... That's why there's two access points to get at the engine

Ill third that! I was even more sadistic...I was into VW Syncro's!! Sometimes I think its the only experience thats made living with Delica problems palatable.

Damn right. You can only do that sh*t so long, before you eventually throw up your hands and walk away. Compared to vintage VW's Delicas really are complacent, co-operative little darlings that just wanna please

So, just wanted to finish this thread off and report back.

The crank seal had actually popped right out, that's why it was leaking oil so bad. Also, the valve cover gasket (which was recently done by a west coast mechanic ) was also leaking... no further comment on that...

Since that area was all opened, they also changed the timing belt, balance shaft belts, and both tensioners. They put in a new water pump, new valve cover gasket, new half-moon gasket. New cam seal, new injection pump seal. I think that's all

Final cost was $1725. A lot of money, but a lot of work was done, and I'm glad that all those things were done now. The van should be in good shape for a while


Thanks for the insights and big thanks to Nukes for the recommendation. Pro-Active got the job done well. Took a while (they are busy) but it's done and I'm back on the road, driving from the right.

yeah, they tend to be busy, but they do good work ( never had any problems when I was taking my surf there) and its a lot of repeat business, so they must be doing something right to keep the business

Just wondering if the blow-by (piston blow-by) or the crank case venting is plugged....and why the seals blew?
