ccautos could definitely set you up - valve clearances, ignition pump timing, glow plug temp sensor, all the usual tweaks. You will notice the difference right away, and after 5-7 days, after everything 'settles' in, it should be really evident how much better your van is running. It is worth the 2 hours drive north from Vic.

they do this one all the time in the phils as they own a shop specially for diesel injection pump service. they know what they doing, they are used to it with this type of diesel engine as we got lots of this jap. engine back home in the phils.
pls dont worry they do good job & with warrantty. ask our fellow delica owner who went there for service. result is happy & do a very good job for your delica & thats the most important thing.
pls dont worry;
Cheers;

Sounds good, I live at Cambie and #5 in Richmond so they are right next door! I will be getting the service very soon.

Hello all I also got the delica tune and wow huge difference. I put a message in the hard starting post as well so I'll keep this short but I thought my van ran great until I got the tune up. I runs WAY better starts right up first crank and no more black cloud of death thanks again mardy
cheers

I thought that I would update this thread as it is no longer accurate. The CVI tune did fix up most of the black smoke issue and helped with the starting, but it did not fix the cold starts like I had said in the title. I had originally thought it did.
Where I was having problems with starting was on Mt. Washington after leaving the van for the weekend in the cold (a real cold start). After getting the tune my starting in general was better at sea level and in warmer temperatures but it was unchanged up on Mt. Washington. I had to crank over the van for many, many minutes to get it to go (like 10 minutes or more) as I had to before the tune.
In the Fall I had my van in to ccautos and they checked it over and found that the valve clearance was quite out of spec. They fixed that up and dealt with some oil leaks. Then the turbo seized and ccautos found that not only was the turbo seized but the intake manifold was very restricted from the oil leaking from the turbo...the leaking oil caused the turbo to seize. Anyway, with the valve clearance in check and the turbo not leaking oil and the intake manifold unrestricted the van was starting pretty well in the cold (-15C) that we had in November/December (but I was not going to say it was fixed). The true test was going to be when ski season hit and I left the van for the weekend. As ski season has not been the best this season I didn't get my test until this past weekend. Left the van all weekend in the cold and wind and it started up just fine on Sunday afternoon. I double glow plugged it, gave it plenty of fuel and cranked for about 5 seconds just to make sure it was going and no problemo.
So, I think I can now say that it is FIXED like the title says. I don't know if the problem was a combination of the valve clearance and the restricted intake manifold or it was just one of them that was the problem.
Maybe that will help someone with there starting issues.

hrmmm... that sounds like exactly the issue I have right now... (I hold the starter cranking for 3 full minutes before it starts, there's a bit of smoke, but it seems to run ok once it gets going)
I did recently (this past summer) have my turbo seize and was replaced...
Valve clearances haven't been checked... I can do that (I think I remember how)... as for the intake manifold... I would have no idea what I'm looking at. though I can say it hasn't been looked at.
I also have some form of an oil leak that still needs to be tackled...

Once mine started I could shut it down right away and it would start without any problems. It was just the initial start that was the problem.
As for the intake manifold I would say that it must be downstream of the turbo somewhere. Just guessing on that. I am sure someone else who is a mechanic can comment.

I'm leary of Pro-Active. I'm not that happy with the work they did on mine. I'm currently having Stevos (also in Calgary) look at my injection pump leak (leaks until it warms up -- leak as in puddle on ground). Stevos can do an overhaul, but I might just decide at Easter to go visit CVI to get an overhaul from the masters.

I just wanted to add my experience with hard starting.
I started having this problem last week and the smoke coming out the exhaust was white with occasional black clouds. I took to ATEB in Burnaby with whom I have had a lot of good experience. They said it looks like incomplete combustion so they checked the glow plugs which were ok but then found that the problem was with the glow plug relay. They changed it and my delica start beautifully again on the first start each time even in the cold temperatures. The ATEB guys have been really good at trouble-shooting and quickly fixing any issues that have come up.
