i heared you about your problem. its unfortunate.
i guess there not used to it to this type of engine.
you know some local mechanic dont care to fix this as they dont make more money, fixing local gasoline car make more money .
its just about the money. they want easy job & make money. they dont even want to touch this diesel jdm as it it does not brake down easily. its like a local dealer, selling new car.
thats why they dont bring this diesel car & van here, reason is that they cannot just make money on service. as diesel last longer than gasoline. its just business & money.
if only you are here in rmd we can fix your delica.
allied trucking charge 500 each way from calgary. but i guess you can find cheaper trucking that has a empty load flat deck 40FT going back to vancouver. so try to look around maybe we can help you.
if need help phone me anytime.
were hear to help:
Cheers; :M

Thank you for the offer Mardy, I do appreciate it. However I have found a place near here which seems quite competant, and enjoys working on these vehicles. It won't be fast as he is a very busy person, but I have been quite impressed by the service so far, and I am more concerned with "right" than "fast"

Thank you again for the offer, and if I were nearer you I might have taken you up on it.

well, here's the latest update from my mechanic...

"this is what we found, no. four cyl's exhaust valve has broken off and created havoc inside the cyl and smashed it up pretty good, the good news is the cyl itself is in good shape so we need one piston, cyl head, head gasket, oil pan gasket, we could go ahead and install new rings in all cyls( we have it apart anyway)"

EDIT: I also need the rubber tube joining the oil pan to the turbo charger and I forgot to mention the other gaskets like the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets

So... anyone have some spare engine parts they want to get rid of? :|

Not pretty!

Any idea what caused this? You seemed to have had your share of problems with your truck now (initial purchase problem, the turbo now this...) Was it just a bad unit? You don't strike me as the type that would forget to change the timing belt or let the oil lever low... Asking this as I thought these thing could go up to 500k km with regular maintenance...

Sorry for all this headache,

Hang on a few days, I may have a source for you.
I'm in the cultural wasteland of Taber just now and will be home next Friday, a friend there may have what you require.

Hey man I just realized you had this problem. :o I read the whole thing and all I have to say is I'm really sorry. The guys in Pro-Active are expensive but they've done this before; you can always take the van there and ask them for an estimate. However it seems that you've found a new mechanic in the area and this is good news. When you have a chance, please share the details with the rest of the Calgary owners.

I hope you can fix your Deli soon and hopefully it's not going to cost you a fortune. One more thing, don't hesitate to ask Mardy for parts; I visited his lot in May and he's got it all.

Regards,

Fabio

I asked my mechanic abut the cause, it seems that it is quite possibly related to the head replacement done a year ago when I first got the vehicle, but it's hard to be certain.

Quoting my mechanic:
to answer your question as to why this happened it could be caused by an error in assembly possibly bending the valve during installation or while putting the engine back together if the timing belt was not installed correctly the first time and bent the valve but both of these you would have noticed when driving there would have been a poofing sound from the exhaust but it could explain the turbo power problem you were telling me about, there would also be smoke coming from the tail pipe usually light grey in colour from incomplete combustion, possibly an old head that hasn't been used for some time and the valve siezed in the guide causing the breakage, but I have seen them just do it out of weakness although never in a low revving diesel
As for who I am using for repairs... kidwrecked pm'd me his brother's info, This is NOT a normal garage, but a very professional sounding hobbyist who seems to absolutely LOVE this sort of work, he has all the right tools and such, and he sounds like he really knows his stuff, but he has limited time to work on these as he has a full time job as well, his shop rate is dirt cheap, but the trade-off is the time required for the work, he has so far only put in 4 hours of work on the vehicle, but it has taken well over a week to do that. the introduction I was given was as follows:
kidwrecked wrote:The only help that I can give is that my brother lives in Strathmore. He is a machinist and a VERY competant mechanic who likes to diagnose and FIX the problems rather than just replace pieces. He is very familiar with diesels, as he worked for a Kabota tractor dealer for 10 years out here before moving to the flat lands. He thrives on Japanese vehicles and has extensive experience with modifications, turbos, diesels, rotary engines, right hand drives, etc. He has a small shop and little time but I know that he would love to diagnose your problems and help. He is completely honest and trustworthy
So far I am very impressed, he sounds like he really knows what he's doing and really enjoys this sort of thing, he has sent me pictures at every step to show exactly what is wrong with full explanations as to what I should be seeing vs the way things are, this is not someone who is just drumming up extra work that isn't really required, he doesn't charge a lot per hour, and judging by the progress so far, and the hours he has spent, he doesn't seem to be wasting any time.

I doubt he has time to work on every little thing, but he certainly seems to be able to handle things well. Once we're all done, and presuming that I'm still as happy with his work as I am now, I will ask him how much Delica work he wants to do, and let people on here know.

for those of you who have been following this thread, I have some good news!
I am back on the road!!!!
I picked up the van on Tuesday evening and drove it home, runs BEAUTIFULLY! now the bad part... took about $3000 to make it run well again (just over $2000 in parts plus just under $1000 in labour)
but not only does the engine run now, it runs more smoothly than it did before as well.
As for what caused it... we have a better idea now, there's a pulley on the timing belt, attached, I believe, to the crank shaft... at some point that pulley was put on backwards, we suspect that caused some issues... (most likely during the first head replacement that I had done a year and a half ago)
in addition to a smooth running engine, a few other problems miraculously sorted themselves out during this whole mess. The turbo appears to be working now (I haven't had a good chance to test it for sure yet, but it seems to be working now, and it hadn't worked since at least that first head replacement if not before) and the air conditioning compressor seems to be kicking in properly now (it also hasn't worked in a long time) I should now be able to get the rest of the r134 put back in and have cold air just in time for winter!

I want to say a huge thank you to Mardy of Amazing Auto Imports and John of Rocky Mountain Imports for all of their hard work sourcing the parts I needed, and answering my calls and emails at all hours of the day and night.
I also want to thank James Phinney, my mechanic, for the work he did, the vehicle has never run so well and the price of his work was a steal of a deal.
