Then it must be the allen socket 'cause even without the impact gun one of them stripped the inside of the bolt (where the allen key connects). I'll have to give it another try this weekend.

OUCH! After hearing about the issues fexlboi and delicat had / are having with the switch over I can give up that nagging feeling that I was a weenie for getting ccautos to install my manuals - and reminds me why I'm scared of wrenching in general - whew! Good luck David, hope you get it sorted out soon... :M

That's usually what happens.

One or the other, the material is soft and get rounded off.

If you can jiggle the allen socket once inside the bolt even just a few mm's, then there's a chance one or the other will strip.

The 8mm allen wrenches that I have are average quality.

Jesse (my mechanic) has impact socket allen keys and those are nearly bulletproof. They more snug and are able to take the shear strength that the smaller or allen keys would.

Most mechanics have these types of allen sockets but do not use impact guns on them for that reason. Either the bolt head or the allen socket will be stronger than the other and chances are it's the bolt head that will strip first.

When I did my last one's at Jay's place, I used one of his 8mm allen sockets 3/8 and a rachet. Had I not used that 3 foot long pole as leverage to crack them loose, it's possible I could have stripped some of them. It's that initial 'crack the bolt loose' that needs to be done.

Repeated burst that come from an impact gun will strip the allen bolt head easier than the single force pull/push of a long pipe/wrench.

If you strip the innards of a Allan head fastener the trick is to take a comparable size (cunny hair larger) torx bit and hammer it into the allan head. This will give plenty of bite. Usually at this point a Hand impact driver should be able to "crack it loose". Also heat from a propane torch will help.
Just my .02 ....its the trick we use at work (kinda industry inside trick).

Hubs picked up - Luna-Sea and kb&2dogs send me a PM for pickup arrangements. This weekend at my place might be a good time. And that way we could all change them together in the driveway. It could be a little 'hub party'. Tee hee!

Ah, got mine today. Opened the box and looked at them. Don't think I'll be installing them until the weather gets a little warmer -- with a forecast high of -18 for tomorrow ...

Looking at the instructions I notice a warning: "use of superwinch hubs with locking differentials will void warranty."

Jesse, any reason for that? Other than a locking hub can put a lot more torque to a wheel than an open diff?

On some vehicles the manual hubs change the way the 4x4 hub <-> diff system works. Ex. Landcruiser 80 series that come with locking differentials and a central locking (viscous/lock) transfercase (sometimes known as a 'center diff lock').

Delica's never came with locking diff's so it's not an issue.

Thank you Jesse: hubs received, and installed. Kathy and Brian picked up and installed theirs (in my driveway), so that only leaves Luna-Sea to come down and retrieve his hubs.

Install went smoothly, with no cursing of bolts or shearing of heads or stripping of bits. Probably because I replaced my brakes last year, which means I'd already fought with the hub bolts and survived. Kathy and Brian's were little problem either. The fiddliest bit was the c-clip for the end of the axle: that's a bugger to do with only a couple of screwdrivers.

Anyway, it's a little comforting to know that my hubs won't be trying to engage on their own any more (I think that was happening from time to time, especially when backing out, the odd THUNK now and then). When the hubs are engaged, they're engaged, when not, not.

Oh ya, and we changed the flasher relay in Kathy and Brian's ride - and it's not behind the glove box!

I have a list of sites in the US that are 'supposed' to have them or buy these from CC Autos so you know you can replace them 1 @a time.

I went looking through the sites before. Lots list them and haven't taken them off their sites as discontinued. I ended up getting some of the aisin ones. They worked good.
