Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
just pipe the oil onto the ground and add 55 drums of engine oil in the van. That way the motor always has fresh oil.
Plus it will help with dust control on dirt roads.

Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
Looking at it now, I think it would have been a whole lot easier (and a lot less work) to build from scratch.

Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
what would be the difference/benefit of using fibreglass instead of aluminum/mixed top ?
I've seen some nice rooflines in the europe that are mixed materials.

Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
I am going with this top because I feel it will be faster, cheaper, easier then building from scratch. Draw back is it in not tough as far as hitting objects.
Should be not to bad to fit....cut into quarters remove inches in each dimension, put a plywood strip on the inside of 2 joints hold it together with screws, test fit, adjust, glass back together on both sides (over the added plywood strips), paint. Cut van roof off (add two braces). Drop on top, screw on.
The roof weighs under 100lbs very light. It would be a great time to take a mold for producing these tops.

Well since you've put it that way, it will be really, really easy to do.thedjjack wrote:Should be not to bad to fit....cut into quarters remove inches in each dimension, put a plywood strip on the inside of 2 joints hold it together with screws, test fit, adjust, glass back together on both sides (over the added plywood strips), paint. Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
Read a few posts where people drive up to the same style year van and cut their roof swap the hitop and drive away in under 2 hours.
It will take some time, but be easier then welding a second Delica on the back!

Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
I've been thinking about taking Turtle's poptop to a boat shop and have them fab up a box mould. Of course that requires time.thedjjack wrote:It would be a great time to take a mold for producing these tops.

Re: Vote for Hitop VS Poptop
So thanks to Jay
and Sam
...We managed to get a few hours on raising the roof.
We managed to take out 12" from the middle and shorten it 22.5". Cuts were measured form a middle line that was at times eye balled. Cuts made with a skill saw with a carbide blade (cut a few screws for fun).
Looks like we are close. Now moving onto some initial fibreglass and few official test fits.
