I was reading the Samurai Trucks website, & it appears that they can import at least a few JDM vehicles to the States, including Mitsu Minicab vans & possibly Delicas??? Am I reading wrong?

There's a number of importers in the US that specialize in the mini kei trucks.

It can be imported only as a farm/offroad use vehicle.

You can't register them nor drive them on public roads.

I wonder if they could be imported as such, used legitimately on a farm, & then when they are 25 years old, re-reg'd as a road vehicle? I know of a few people that probably could use a vehicle like these on the farm, for a few years... Maybe I'm stretchin' it a bit, eh?

Nope. :-(

According to the US import laws, vehicles newer than 25 years of age imported into the country can only be used as parts/farm/offroad vehicles and will never be allowed to be registered for public road use.

The actual pdf doc is available online at one of the gov sites.

Great forum - quite the education here :-)

Let's say I have a family member who lives in Canada (I need to find out whether or not they have obtained citizenship yet). What if the vehicle were registered in their name and it just so happened to be driven 365 days/year in the US? Would they have to insure the vehicle in Canada? Any potential downsides or foreseeable problems with this option that you guys can think of??

One of the major issues would be insurance. Read the rest of the thread, I'm sure it addresses this.

I also recommend reading this page: Welcome to Delica Canada: Read This Before You Do Anything.

Two problems.

It will depend on which province they live in (vehicle will be registered/insured) that will dictate how long they can drive outside of the province insured.

The second is again insurance. What happens in case of an accident ? You can really open up a liability lawsuit if it goes that way.

What would your family member think of you driving their vehicle insured under their name outside of Canada ?

Good points - thanks for the feedback.

Another question... If I'm employed by a Canadian company, yet live in the US; does that open any possibilities? Or, does it come down to where you claim your primary residence?
