My van wouldn't fire so a buddy and myself thought we smelt gas in the fuel so we emptied out the gas tanks and reassembled the fuel filter (manually pumped and let the air out of the top) and now we can't seem to see any diesel coming out of the line to the cylinder (we loosened one line at the cylinder head).

If the fuel pump is broken... how can I test it to see if is in fact broken.

PS someone said what I need to do is turn the engine over while someone manually pumps the fuel (on the fuel filter) but we do this until the battery runs dead and still no fuel coming out of the one line we have opened up at the cylinder.

Any suggestions?

I have not looked to closely at the injector pump, But it must have a lift pump built in I would start there (lift pump brings fuel from the tank to the actual injector pump).

I'm just quoting from the manual I downloaded from this site:

chapter 13B-2
"The fuel is drawn out of the fuel tank by means of the feed pump which is built into the fuel injection pump. It then passes though the fuel filter and is feed to the injection pump. The fuel is pressurized by the feed pump, and this fuel pressure is controlled by the regulating valve which is built into the pump. then, the feil is compressed by the plunger and injected from the nozzles at high pressure in accordance with the injection sequence."


I guess this is why I was told to manually pump the system - to pressurize it. I guess you have to do this when you change the fuel filter.

There doesn't seem to be any instructions on putting new seals in the pump or how to service it.

Just throwing stuff out there...
Disconnect fuel line from I/P to engine, then manually pump. You should eventually see fuel come out of the I/P where the fuel line was connected. In my experience, it shouldn't take very long to get fuel to that location. Once you get fuel to that location, reconnect fuel line and try to start... it will still take a little cranking but not so long that your battery will die and you should hear it trying to start until it gets the full dose of fuel it needs.

If you don't get fuel out of the engine side of the I/P after manually pumping, it may be worth checking to see if your fuel filter reservoir has fuel in it. If not, I suspect your I/P needs repair as it is not pulling fuel from the tank(s). Even if your manual pump doesn't work, you should still be able to crank the engine with the same effect but that wears on things like starter motor and battery as you have already discovered.

The only other check would be to ensure all your fuel lines are still connected from tanks to I/P and there are no leaks. I/P repair is not cheap if you have someone do it so a little crawling around underneath to be sure is a good investment prior to ripping the I/P out.

did you open the bleeder screw on the filter head when you pumped by hand to see if even youre getting fuel to there?

I did loosen the bleeder nut on top of the fuel filter. Then I disconnected the fuel line to the IP and manually pumped to see if fuel was coming out there. I also looseded the nut where the fuel line connects to the IP to bleed that little bit of line.

I'm hoping it is the fuel shutoff solenoid and thats why the pump isn't getting fuel to the engine.
