Hi folks,

I'm new here with my 1995 L400. I'm wondering if my fuel consumption is correct. I did a 430 km with a full diesel tank. I read a few topic in this forum and it seem that 430 km is not good enough. My Egr valve is already blanked. I read some other topics saying that changing the injection pump seal shaft may improved consumption. What do you think I should do to have improvement?
Maybe one more thing. I live in Quebec and this consumption was made in winter condition, so, cold start where not good (don't have a block eater yet), star well but after a few seconds, the engine come close to stall. When warming up a few minute later, run well.

Hi, daniel,
the consumption is o.k.
every driver has diff style of driving.
remember L400 is bigger , taller & heavier than L300
but when need power L300 is nothing compare to L400
L300=92hp even with turbo, while L400 has 125Hp
so your its ok i would say. its also ahs 4 cylinder diesel on it.
4wd & other.

In the winter months, the fuel consumption is not as good as summer.

This is because the diesel at the gas station pump is a 'winter blend' and mixed with colder startups and driving conditions, will raise the fuel consumption.

Average winter fuel consumption - 14L/100km
Average summer fuel consumption - 12/100km

This of course varies from driver to driver and driving habits, tire size, etc ...

At 430km's you should be using about 60L.

Jesse saying are write. I've notice a big difference between winter and summer. Here in Ottawa I won't get a good mileage on cold day and back in Vancouver with the same van I'd get really good mileage

Summer: 11/12L /100km
Winter: 15L / 100km (mostly 2wd and 4wd on snow days and to get in and out of snowy parking)

Thanks everyone for your advices. I was just wondering that with a 65 litres fill, It was not a excellent consumption. And by reading a few thread on this site ( I saw someone saying he did 550 km per fill) I thought there was something wrong with it.
And to answer the Mr. Pistachio (Antoine) questions, I was able to plate it after a long long process. I started the purchase agreement way back, long time ago (in april 2009) and with all the complicated thing of the law changing here in quebec, I was able to have a special aproval and go with the registering thing. It was so much complicated to register has they need many official papers (customs, contract sales, certificates...) Thanks to Silkroad auto for beeing so much cooperative, It was the hardest sale ever for Karim! Don't hesitate to go with Silkroad, this guy works for you, he is almost your slave!:)

But after all of this, now I can drive, understand and learn this wonderfull vehicule. Many people here in quebec like it and also the mechanical of CAA. They even says why we don't have that kind of vehicule here in north america!
This site is also fantastic, every little thing is mention somewhere.

Je me demandais bien comment tu avais réussi à plaquer parce que je viens d'arriver de la Colonie-Botanique avec mon L400 et je dois le plaquer en Ontario et je cherche la manière de contourner la loi mais il y a visiblement aucune solution. Étant donné que je suis dans la Région d'Ottawa-Gatineau c'est moins grave car j'habite à Ottawa mais franchement c'est casse-couille. Effectivement les quelques fois que j'ai appelé la SAAQ c'était la première question: avez-vous acheté votre véhicule avant avril 2009?

Je crois qu'il y a aucune solution à part peut-être les L400 de Taiwan

There seems to be some variation in fuel tank sizes, as I'm sure I couldn't get 65 L in my 95 L400. From scary empty to nearly overflowing is just over 50 L, which will give me a little less than 450 km of city driving. Last tank worked out to 11.5 L/100 km.

There is not.

All L400's have a single 75L fuel tank. Every single one.

Just because the gauge is at the 'E' doesn't mean it's at scary empty.

In the Japanese owners manual, service manual and every piece of information on the Internet says that the Mirsubishi L400 spacegear has one 75L fuel tank.

Like I said and others including the owners manual (use the search function), Mitsubishi states 12L/100km fuel consumption for the 4M40 diesel and 75L.

The maximum I have seen after running out of diesel was 71.5L to fill back up. The pickup tube does not hit the bottom of the tank so you'll never get the 'full' 75L capacity.

Typical full tank fillup is 65L at a maximum of 550-570km's

The L300 Automatic carries 75 litres of fuel in the tanks. The fuel gauge is designed to read that when you use up 60 litres the gauge reads empty and a little amber fuel pump illuminates on your instrument cluster. You now have 15 litres left ~ consider this your "reserve" tank.

I am not sure how the L400 is wired but it strikes me as not being so far fetched that if they designed the L300 Delica with that type of fuel protocol then perhaps they might also design the L400 that way.
Why not pop into L400 Delica Downloads and read the L400 Owner's Manual and find out?

It could also be that your gauge just isn't reading the way it did when new. Mine says it's at empty when I've used 40L and I have driven it to a quarter below E and still only filled up with 60L. My warning light has never come one (not sure if it works yet).
