Hello all! ive got a 91 exceed, and ive got some transmission issues.. I noticed an irregular wine two nights ago, like the noise most trannys make in reverse. I figured id take it in and check the fluid heights after i returned from a trip. Now ive returned home and its much worse. Im thinking its my throwout bearing, its a loud clunky rattle in neutral at idol, then disappears when i push in the clutch. The wine also changes pitch with RPM, and when i shift gear, it follows the engine speed..

This could be very likely the case. Pull the transmission and inspect; also if your clutch has not been replaced very recently, get a good organic disc and heavy duty pressure plate. Be sure to use only Japanese, North American, or South Korean clutch parts and bearings. Even if the kit is from a company from one of the above locations, inspect each part to be sure of where it is made. NEVER USE CHINESE MADE CLUTCH PARTS! I have seen the Chinese made discs crack, and the pressure plates are worthless for clamping power also.
Inspect the flywheel also, and resurface or replace if needed.

While you have the transmission out, be sure to take the flywheel off and replace the rear main seal.

If you have not done a transmission/clutch job before, find someone who has and get help (all the better if they have a transmission jack. Otherwise, borrow or rent one).

If the noise disappears when in neutral and clutch pedal is pressed it can't be the throw out bearing, it must be in the transmission itself. Pressing the clutch pedal will push the throw out bearing into the clutch pressure plate and disengage the engine from the transmission.
If the throw out bearing was the issue it would make noise when it engaged the clutch pressure plate as you pressed the pedal.

I Suggest you do another posting with the subject such as Kelowna Transmission Help. Then the Kelowna owners can see it, and recommend who can do it in Kelowna. I know in Vancouver that Butch at CVI Automotive fixes everything on L300's including clutches and transmissions. Good Luck, Christine.

oh god.... the nasty rattling/clunk definitely disappears when the clutch is "engaged" but i somewhat disagree with that post.. (mostly because im terrified about my tranny being @#$%ed)
but why would i have a clunking noise in my tranny? that doesnt make any sense.. the wine would indecate to me a dry tranny, But its a fubar throwout bearing fits this prognosis no?
i dont have the facilities to drop my transmission and do a clutch job, i had one done on a front wheel drive vw and it set me back 900$ labour, but id imagine thats a much more involved job than a 4WD
has anyone paid to have this done?
And also i found a post for japanese clutches so no worries there, but that is a hell of a good post!

i had my tranny replaced after owning my deli for about 2 months...

i took my deli to Coast Powertrain. it took longer to get a replacement trans, than it took them to install it.
i would source the tranny yourself, and then take them both in with you.

expect to pay around $2500 bucks total.(1500 trans/1000 labor) taxes are a bitch.
personally, IMO i think that the tranny was way overpriced. they had me by the balls, and knew it too; since 5spds aren't common.

Ah, I must have misread that; yes the throwout bearing would become noisy only if the clutch was engaged and the bearing was bad. And then it would be more like a odd sounding grinding noise (hard to describe unless you know the sound a bad bearing makes) and not a clunking, etc.

The first thing to do is let someone who knows transmissions drive it. Get at least 3 quotes for the work before you do anything!

your all correct the tranny is the issue... The imput gear/counter has a an excessive amount of lash. Basically i need gears, or a new tranny.. They told me about 800 in labour plus parts... so where do i find said tranny/gears(and bearings) and yes its a 5spd

Try Ccautos on the Island 1 250 954 2157. If they don't have one they can give some good ideas of where to find one.

is it 5spd, and what condition are the gears/syncros in? how much for shipping to kelowna?

We have not opened the transmission and checked the gears but it came out of a running/driving vehicle that had been hit on the roof by a tree. We did drive it around the shop to test it but have not been on the highway with it. I can open the bottom up and take a couple of pictures of the inside if this would help ??

There is a place in the US that has rebuild kits that should fit our trans. I do not have time to search, but it maybe worth replacing the bearings, syncros when it is out. Kit was around $200.00.

What are you doing with the old transmission? If you are going to recycle it I would be interested in it. I looking for a blown 5 speed to take apart. I think there may be a taller 5th gear that will work (lower overdrive) to bring down highway RPMs in 5th gear. Let me know if you are going to recycle it and I will come up and get it off you.

id much prefer to rebuild my old trans, but i cant find ANYTHING in the way of tranny rebuild kits.. i know there is a place in the lower mainland called "japanoid inports" im going to track them down in the coming days and see what they have.. My worries about buying a used tranny is i might end up in the exact same spot not far down the road. i cant believe how small these boxes are for how much torque, weight, and heat they have to contend with!! why the hell isnt there a tranny cooler on these things?
