underpriced?
I'm looking around for a vehicle for my brother and I came across this one. I thought Pajero's where going for more than this so I think that may be a problem with it. What do you all think. Does the brand new cylender head hint that he may have overheated the engine?
I plan on going to see it tomorrow morning. (kingsway/Boundary area) anyone wanna come along?

Re: underpriced?
The combination of the water pump and cylinder head make me suspicious. I have dealt with a recent case where a SAAB's water pump bearings went and caused a leak, ALL the coolant emptied out, AND the owner continued to drive it. I don't think that he even saw the temperature gauge peg. Needless to say, the head and head gasket went bad.

Re: underpriced?
I had good like with my Delica which I bought for $4000 so there are deals but mine didn't have any warning signs like this one. Anyone think the timing belt might have gone and destroyed some of these items?

Re: underpriced?
are there any signs that I can look out for when looking at the engine that would indicate that it had overheated? Any other visuals I should be wary of?

Re: underpriced?
Likely cracked a head. If you are in doing that repair you might as well put in a new water pump and timing belt while access is wide open. Makes sence to me.
I would be asking why the new head. Assuming a cracked head...if it cracked from overheating has the cooling system been overhauled etc so it will not overheat again? (I come from the Hilux Surf crowd where it drives me up the wall how many people crack a head...then replace the head, but never solve the underlying issue that caused the head to crack in the first place...then are surprised when it cracks again...aaargh)

I've noticed most 2.5L's list for $5k-7k average. No idea what they sell for though.
Ask him for receipts and if you feel better about it take it in for a good inspection of the cooling system and go from there.
Sometimes you have to drop your pants if you want to sell these in a reasonable time.

Re: underpriced?
I picked up my 92 lwb 2.5 with 108500km for $3700 in calgary on kijji, they were asking $4800.00, but it had some minor things wrong with it. My first one also a 92 cost $5000 in red deer it had 148000km. that one only lasted 400km then blew the motor up
I would say that its a good price to ask, but i wouldnt offer him that much. if it seems good then id start at $3800 worst he can do is say no, and you can always go up from there. (when i was looking at getting a pajaro most of the 2.8 diesels were around 9-12 k, and the 2.5 diesel was 4-7k. thats why i went 2.5
hope this helps
If i could of found the box style (like the 91) i would of been all over it
they look great

Re: underpriced?
So the head did crack. He says he's a mechanic and he fixed the problem. New thermostat, hoses too, I think. Any precautions regarding owning a vehicle that has had a cracked head? (apart from what has been mentioned by psilosin)

Re: underpriced?
I've seen cracked heads replaced with a new head and have the 2nd one grenading as well.
Not only specific to the mistu 2.5 in the Paj/Delica's.
I would not buy one with a replaced head unless it was done by one of the few competent shops as they do a number of tests and surface prep so that the head/gasket/block all mate up properly without any gaps.
Also if the head was replaced due to cracking, I would make certain the radiator, waterpump, thermostat and hoses are all new.

Re: underpriced?
Needs a bit work...I think. It has a lot of sway in the front end when moving the steering wheel back and forth while moving (slowly of course) down the road. But for the price...maybe.
Where would a good place be to have it checked out? Has anyone used BCAA? I'm thinking the usual suspects are probably too busy to do a vehicle inspection. (cvi, amazing auto etc...)
