Pajero Tuning

I boasted some great mileage a while back driving to Calgary and back, but man has that changed!

Its gotten so bad the past month I stopped keeping track.. I went from getting 550km/tank in Calgary on winter gas and some additives all HWY and, well calgary driving.. to less than 370 per fill..... The only difference has been keeping tire pressure lower due to our deteriorating roads, and its city driving. I changed the oil fuel and air filter, lowered the fueling and still net only 380km/fill!

It runs great and all, but I am hoping to tune a better balance of power and economy without having to buy a second set of tires, yet.. It has been sluggish lately despite some TLC and usual maintenance.

I installed a autometer boost guage in the compass position (tried fixing the compass, but it didn't want to calibrate.. Free compass/thermometer if someone wants it) Then I picked up a EGR blanking kit and pyrometer off of RichD and installed that. (thanks homes, went smooth!)

What a great little kit, he even gave me a trusty aluminum enclosure that keeps everything nice and tidy. I was going to mount it in the gauge pod, but it fits so well in the cubby under the stereo that I think I'll keep it there. Its a little out of view , so its distracting if you're trying to keep an eye while driving, but its just a shiny new dial so of course I'll watch it for now.. I love how small the thing is, about half the size I was expecting due to the huge macro photo's.

I figured since I can finally keep track of the boost and temps, its time to up the boost. I added 2mm of washers under the wastegate for a boost increase from 11psi to 13psi. I took it for a rip on and off the highway with a couple good hills, and it seemed to have plenty of air but be starved of fuel. I couldn't get the RPMs much about 3000 so I upped the max fueling screw. This helped bring some fire to the beast, and a little higher EGTs. I have no temps as a baseline so I don't know what the boost increase did for my EGT's. I'll have to see how high they can get as it is.

I haven't been up the cut or any hwy passes, but I ripping up to Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam, and the temps didn't get above 600 or so. I was flooring it probably with a little smoke, but we'll see what happens at highway speeds.. Judging my my EGTs around town, even floored it I have a hard time getting it above 550. This is a good thing, meanwhile all this time I was worried I was cooking my poor little head!

What a difference already though.. like night and day really.. I even had to adjust the tranny kickdown a bit to compensate for the extra mid and top end grunt as it shifted a little late. It coasts much better now, not having to constantly be on the skinny, and it has much better response. The added turbo whistle is a nice plus in my books (could use more!!) and seemed to have turned more heads than the day before 8-) lol. Its too early to tell for certain, but just judging by the fuel gauge it looks like I got 80 km more out of the second quarter of fuel compared to the first. (and if you know what Im saying, usualy the first quarter lasts 150+kms when running perfect)

Now I am new to tuning diesels so I just have a couple questions:

How high can I set the boost before I have to start worrying about the internals? I would like to run it closer to 14-16psi max

I have read repeatedly that the 2.5l can handle upto 14lbs safely, but I haven't found concrete numbers for the 2.8. I also know that it is set to blow off at around 15psi anyways, so I'd most likely have to put a heavier spring to prevent blowing prematurely?? :? How high have you guys set your 4m40's?

Now for fueling.. I know the pump has two or three adjustments for fueling.. but I only know of one, and I believe that is the max fuel screw on the back of the pump covered by what was a rubber cover. I understand that there should be a separate adjustment for boost fueling? Does anyone have a picture of the pump that is labeled?

I know I am tuning by 'feel' more than anything, so as long as I keep the temperatures reasonable, is there anything I should be monitoring or looking out for? I am already looking into a coolant gauge to keep an eye on things as I've seen the stock gauge move once and don't trust it. But if there is anything else I am at all ears.

I'll get some pics up as time allows.
Peace

Hi, sorry I can't help you with any mechanical input,I can't change my own oil, but I am looking for a internal
temp sensor for my pajero. It is mounted on a small aluminum plate on the steering wheel.
If you don't need yours anymore i would like to have it, just name your price.
Thanks

Ok, you can have it. For One Million Dollars!!... muahahaha

It doesn't have the plastic cover/clip that holds the thermistor in place though.

PM your location and its yours.

And as an update with the tune. The extra top end grunt is nice, but I would like more midrange umph so the turbo spools faster. Im going to make some new intercooler piping for less flex which will help. My 2 dollar zap-straps I put on a year and a half ago have hardened from the heat and are starting to crack and fall off. Doing some research online I found a great thread on the UK pajero forum.

http://www.pocuk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=94105 That pretty much answers most of the questions I had in the first post.

Can anyone recommend a small muffler shop that would take on a small job like the intercooler pipes on the cheap? I'll check out the fittings at kazakhstanian tire, but Im pretty sure that going that route is bound to look ghetto.

did you mount your pyrometer sensor probe pre or post turbo??

I mounted it to the EGR delete, so it should be fairly accurate. Driving the Coq. friday, we'll see how much damage I've done in the past ripping up those hills at 140 lol. (that was on 31's, man did she fly lol)

hmmmm you've got me worried now with those temps. I have a 2.5 and I've got 33 inch tires and if i stand on it up Blue Mountain hill, Ill see temps approaching 800 degrees in 4th gear.......

I've completely cleaned out my intercooler and also have an egr delete with probe in the plate

I dont have a boost gauge yet

im also lucky to get 400kms on a tank

Haven't been up blue mountain in a while, but you must be bookin' it if you're standing on it in 4th lol. A sustained 800 shouldn't be too bad? you shouldn't have to worry until probably 900. I've heard a bit more at 1000ish with the 2.8. Im more concerned about hitting 1200 for more than a few minutes when the aluminum becomes puddy.. (Please chime in if you know otherwise) Thats why for me the Coq will be fun. jfarsang was saying that he barely had to hold back, or something along those lines with the L400, so it should be even easier for the SWB paj barely loaded. (maybe I just selectively read that lol)

Boost makes a big difference but only on climbs and hwy speeds IMO, plus you have to up the fueling to really get it breathing. I would like to have the boost spool at a lower RPM but from what I've read, you have to re-mill the eccentric cone that regulates that. Sounds over my head, for now. My goal for now is to track it over a few months, and find the best compromise between boost and fueling. I want to get the exhaust intercooler pipes made as soon as the time and $$ allows and I know that will help.

When I first put fresh zap straps on the intercooler I got 80kms or so more per tank. This gradually died down as they started stretching from the heat etc. Now they're almost useless but I haven't taken the time to cut and restrap 100 ties!

Just a guess, but I think its a given you will sit around 400km/tank with the 2.5 and 33's especially if they're muds? Is it auto or manual?

Btw it made a world of a difference when I had the CVI tune. Ask Edwin to advance the injection pump timing and he just winks and knows what to do lol. It was enough of an improvement to even excite my GF as she took over hwy duty. 8-)

Do you have any idea how often I need to have them cleaned? It has been a year and I'm thinking it may need it again? Does using diesel additives gum up the injectors at all, as I use some cetane/lube to keep things smooth?

I use a product called standyne. if anything it should keep the injectors cleaner from what i understand

I have never had mine cleaned so im not really sure

I use http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/G ... ?locale=en all year around. Along with cleaning it provides lubricating of whatever should be lubricated :)

I like the generic truck stop petro-canada diesel conditioner, makes the truck run like a top on roadtrips etc. I admit I use more than prescribed :? :-)
