Holding power...

Engine/trans that is...

I'm wondering how strong the low range gears are on the L300. Can you crawl down a steep slope without having to ride the brakes?

The only reference I have is an early 90s Ford Exploder - which had no ability to hold itself back, and a 86 Landcruiser - which could hold its speed in a near vertical position...

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has owned or driven both L300 and 400 in such situations.

Cheers,

pe

Ya, these drivetrains are great. even with only 2:1 low gear. the 4.63 or 4.86 differential ratio makes up for that though, and being diesel. it will crawl nicely, and even move without using the gas (just letting off the clutch slowly). of course that depends on the hill.

others will probably have better stories to add.

The L300 transfer case is laid out as 2H; 4H & 4L. When in four low ~ everything is slow. Went down a very steep long hill in 4L... no brakes.

Its not going to crawl like a cruiser.. If you're serious about descents and you run a larger tire with an auto, you'll appreciate these http://www.marks4wd.com/products/gearma ... -gears.htm

Budget for at least $2200 total to install. Im hoping to get them in by next summer. Unless you have a manual, low gearing is not the mitsu's strong point.
