yet another bypass oil filter install . . . need advice

Post by delicioso! »

hi folks,

did some searches and read a couple good threads. just wanted to share my situation before goin all the way. went to pick up some gen49d diesel lubricant from a local kleen oil dealer and he said he has a used unit for half the price (in mint shape), it's the 2nd smallest one that does up to 16L of oil. anyway, me and my old man are headed out to banff, leaving this friday, and i thought might as well get this installed before the long haul (the oil/filter is still relatively new at about 1000K on it since getting the van from mardy). so i'm in a bit of a time crunch and would like some confirmation just to make sure. i'm getting an experienced installer that's done hundreds of these installs but it'll be his first on the delica.

he asked if/where he could find a 1/8th or 1/4" fitting of an oil line somewhere near the oil filter? i've seen one or two pics, it's just underneath the engine next to the filter? and where would be the best place to send the oil back in? i've seen/heard tapping into the valve cover, tapping into the oil filler cap, and tapping into the oil pan underneath. does the valve cover have to be removed?!! quite a bit of stuff there to get at it. where's the optimal place to tap in?!

anyway, i've only heard amazing things about the kleen oil systems here (practically every bus/transit system here from the GTA and all around the greater horeshoe and a tonne of truck fleets and ambulance/firetruck dept.s and ontario hydro have their system....didn't realized that it cleans brand new oil even further, wow).

it's quite a large housing. i've seen a couple guys use a bracket across over the air filter in that void. b/c of the weight of it, i'm a tad leary about bolting it to the side of the engine bay where the bolts would come out behind the wheel well i would think..

that bracket can swivel to get the right angle..
Image

where should we bolt this sucker?!

Image

he gave me the nipple attachment to take samples out for free, nice fella.

guy is coming in on wednesday to have a look and if all looks good, will install (he's got everything in his van and his fee is very reasonable).

any comments/suggestions i could mention? feels a bit rushed since we're headed out friday, but i think he can pull it off provided there aren't any unforseen roadblocks..

hope you can help!

cheers.

romey

we should arrive in calgary, if all goes well, sometime next tuesday!

The easiest place to use as an oil source would be using the port from the oil pressure sensor....which on the L400 is amazingly easy to get at...its right under the intercooler in plain sight. So easy to get to and out in the open when I first saw it I thought it must be a coolant temp sensor not an oil pressure sensor since they usually tend to be in the most awkward hard to access location possible. Just remove the sensor, install a T, reinstall sensor on 1 side, feed line to bypass filter from the other side.

For the return I would tap into the filler cap. It has many benefits in that it is easy to do, provides the top of the engine with a bath of clean oil, and makes it easy to take a sample should you want an oil analysis. And if you f it up, a filler cap is a lot cheaper than an oil pan. :)

awesome, thanks psilosin! that's what i figured about using the cap (which i've seen a lot with the amsoil set up, and i was leary too about taping into the metal and leaving bits on the other end if the pieces weren't removed first, which would involve a great deal of work..?). great, so the intercooler doesn't even have to be removed either. i'll have a look when i get home. i think the main challenge is where to hang this heavy bypass unit w/out damaging the attachment when i'm bouncing around and stressing the bracket...and still alow the top to be removable and easy to get to..that nipple also allows for oil samples.

so i take it that there's no huge concern as to where to tap from regardless (whether from the bottom near the oil filter or the top/oil sensor), since it's all flowin together anyway.

You can see the sensor with the intercooler in place but do have to remove the intercooler to get workable wrench access. The memory is fading already but I think removal was just 4 10mm bolts, 2 ring clamps, and a couple of electrical connectors to disconnect when I removed mine.

is that the oil sensor with the wire on it?

Image

just peaking under the intercooler, near the front..

Image

so, what a bout bracket placement? that clear area in white an okay place to drill t hrough and bolt?

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a37/st ... G_6671.jpg
Image

not much space here and it's too far back to get easy access to the bypass..

and here's the filler cap with a screw in the middle to carefully widen with a larger bit....carefull not to bust it open as i don't think i'll be able to get a replacement soon enough!

Why not take the rocker cover off and drill and add a fitting. much cleaner install and you would not need to worry about having a hose coming out of the filler cap?

thought of that too, but i'd like to not go through the extra time/labour to pull everything out and up. should i be concerned if the hose was coming out of the filler cap? figured might just be a tad cumbersome when unscrewing it, but so long as it's not too tight in there? i'm also in a bit of a time crunch since we leave friday....worse comes to worse, we can still go that route and just get a new filler cap at another time.

real time help please!

anyone know the thread size of the oil sensor fitting? the installer travels and has his stuff in his truck and wants to make sure he's not making extra trips to get the T in there.

. . . is it a 1/8" Tee fitting?

As long as you use a swivel fitting in the filler cap it shouldn't be any annoyance when you need to unscrew/rescrew. And you will never lose your oil filler cap. :-)

Not sure what the oil pressure sensor thread is. Hopefully someone can chime in. My Toyotas were all metric thread, better check with your installer to see if he has some metric fittings in his toolbox in case.

As far as I remember from our install (on a l300 though) it is metric.

yeah, i was concerned about it being metric, then i saw nother thread on the l300 section and the fella used what looked like a 1/8x1/8x1/8th fitting, which i was just assuming was 1/8th inch, for his oil sensor..

so did i take a pic of the right part under the itnercooler? the one with the wire on top is the sensor, so pop that out, T, pop back on the T and so on...?

thanks for the quick replies fellas!

According to my sources the thread size is 1/8" x 28 BSP.

money! thanks profitser! i recall seeing that pic somewhere before. fingers crossed, i think all that's left is bracket placement! will take photos of the process if all goes well.

cool, looks like i did take a pic of the oil sensor with the wire attachment, same piece by the looks of it. think we'll be able to just prop the intercooler up and not have to disconnect it entirely...

well, it was all done this morning in under 2 hours. ran the motor with one of the fittings loose till we saw oil come out to make sure the line was live and then tightened it. no leaks, no mess, so far so good! drove in to work, stopped before getting on the highway to make sure all was tight, all good, checked again a couple more times, and and it's all dry at all the connections. thanks to a fella named Tony who came bright n early with a trailer for a shop behind his ford truck (he's a heavy machinery mechanic and has done these bypass systems on $30G engines and truck/bus fleets so i was confident in his skills). all in parts and labour, 150 bucks plus he gave me spare SS lines just in case for our long roady to banff.

some step by step pics for those unsure about how the set up works...

find oil sensor, remove it, use T fitting 1/8th" (has to be the right thread that matches sensor)
Image
Image

for some strange reason, the t fitting wouldn't go it, so that bolt where the oil sensor attaches to was removed and a banjo fitting/re-tap was done, went in perfectly this time.

Image

using some sealant for the hinges (forgot what it was) attach oil sensor on top, re-attach T fitting back, the attach a 90 degree fitting on the centre for the oil line going into the bypass filter

Image

Tony said he could easily tap into the valve cover gasket through aluminum. so he felt around inside the oil filler hole and felt a smooth spot in the back. he was quite delicate with this process, drilled till he poked a hole, placed grease on the bit, placed a rag inside and behind the other end, and went all the way in...i was a little anxious at this point. when he pulled the bit out, pieces of aluminum were stuck on the grease. he reached in with more grease on his fingers to catch any bits and it was done. then he tapped the proper thread in for the fitting..

Image

Image

next, find a good spot above the inner fender inside the engine bay, drill two holes to match bypass filter bracket, making sure all is clear around it for the lines, etc..

Image

Image

install bracket, test fit SS oil lines from valve cover and oil sensor, about 4 feet. attache 2 lines. one from oil sensor to input and from output to valve cover. tighten lines and install filter housing into bracket. double check everything. cover up the lines and zip tie nice and neatly.

Image

Image

Image

perfect spot for it, that nipple is to get oil samples for analysis.

Image

added 1 litre of oil, ran the motor and wait for the oil to gush out the other end (here we saw the oil go back into the valve cover with a strong gush!)

and voila!

thanks again for the quick tips and advise fellas! pretty stoked. looking back and seeing it all done, with the right tools, i could prolly do it. well worth the 150 bucks though as i would've had to make numerous trips to hardware stores and hydraulic shops to get it all figured out. tapping into the valve cover alone would've made me crap my pants though.

hope that helps. for those ontario fellas interested, i can certainly show you the set up in person in a meet, or just post up if you have any questions. the kleen oil dealer was amazing and super helpful and definitely knew his stuff.

and thanks kleen oil!!!! http://www.kleenoil.ca/

cheers.
