BCAA vs ICBC Roadstar vs ICBC Roadside assistance

Recently I needed a flatbed tow from Revelstoke to Vancouver due to a blown turbo.

Paying out of my pocket $2,100

With ICBC Roadside plus $2,000

With BCAA premium $500

Annual cost for ICBC roadside plus $50
They deduct $100 for towing which you have to pay up front and get reimbursed for later

Annual cost for BCAA premium $110
You only pay the difference after 320km's

As soon as I got back home I cancelled my ICBC roadside plus and roadstar. What a joke.
I spent $40 in phone calls to ICBC trying trying to decipher what they cover. Turns out not much.

BCAA on the other hand I was on the phone for less than 5 mins and 40 mins later my rig was being towed home.

Big difference in service and cost.

If you travel outside of your city, pay the $110 a year for the premium BCAA membership.
Most people don't buy it and then need it. Quite painful to open your wallet and bend over for towing if you only have ICBC or nothing at all.

Heads up for the traveling folk this summer :M

Thanks Jafarsen, the information is very helpful. I did have an offer from BCAA a while ago . It was free until the time of renewal. I turned it down at that time but now I think it is a much better idea to apply for that since we do travel to further places in our Delica. It gives a peace of mind feeling.

Cheers.

with BCAA you can also get great deals on hotels and car rentals.. seriously HUGE differences in price, even better than expedia/tripadvisor/etc

I am with BCAA since I bought my first Delica in 2008 and I used their service a few times. I did not need them for any other vehicle I owned. :-D

I agree that BCAA is the way to go...I have been a member since 2004. While I haven't had to use it for the Delica so far, being able to get a couple free 320 km tows is worth it alone. In addition to the BCAA discounts, you can swipe your BCAA card if you fill up at Husky gas stations, which comes off of your BCAA renewal cost the next year (it doesn't add up to a whole lot, but a discount is a discount).

I'm not sure how the ICBC roadside assistance works, but with BCAA, the coverage goes with the card holder. So, if you are the passenger and your buddy's car breaks down, you can still use your BCAA card.
