Hey Guys & Gals,

Today, while doing my oil change and have a beer over this awesome 4M40 we have, I've notice a sensor that seemed to come a part from it's place. I don't know for how long it's been disconnected and the engine run fine.

The sensor itself is under the intercooler pluged into what seems like the IP unit. But it looks like an addition to the IP. There's a line the runs from the brake Master cylinder in the module and an other line to the engine (lower part of the head)

Any help will be greatly accepted!

Bummer. The male spade connector tab has broken right off yours so you will either have to be creative with a way to re-attach the wire, or order a new sensor.

That's the oil sending unit that sends a signal to the oil light on the dash when the level is low.

The stock ones are quite flimsy.

Bummer indeed. Will the van explode if I'm going around until I find the replacement part?

The crucial question is: 4 of my buddies are counting on me for a fishing trip for the long weekend, the van is packed ready to go etc... I think everyone understand the gravity of the sutiation. My life, reputation, everything basically is on the line if I'm to say: sorry guys my van can't go!

Just double check the oil level a few times and you are fine.

Did you use the other oil sensor to determine if the level is correct? It's the one with the little plastic loop on the end, and when pulled on extracts a long metal stick out of the engine...

Okay, I'm being cheeky, but seriously: if your engine is running fine, and you just changed the oil, and your buddies are waiting for their bestest friend with the coolest van to take them fishing, and the sensor has been broken up until you just discovered it... things should be fine.

Order a new sensor from Rocky Mountain Imports, or Coombs Country Auto, or Amazing Auto, or Rising Sun Auto, or Right Drive (in your neck of the woods), take your buddies fishing, and change it when you get back.

same camera angles and everything too! from what i've learned, all you need to do is take the 4 bolts off the loosen the intercooler, you don't have to take the hoses off, just pry up and that's enough room to get a wrench in there and take it out/replace. might as well do a bypass system while you're at it, lol! have fun fishin!

As Jesse mentioned it is just a warning circuit so you do not need to fix it asap...it has no function in any kind of feedback system for the engine etc. It just functions to warn you if you have a loss of oil pressure. I'd definately fix it when you get a chance to though.

Speaking of dipstick!

My friend (other then fishing party) came by with is 2009 Beamer 335 and was quite proud of it! So pop the hood, look around and what did I not found! A dipstick! So I did some research to convience myself I wasn't crazy, well guess what the engine didn't had dipstick! Crazy!

Particularly the comments about oil sensor failures!

Reminds me of an older "Candid Camera" remake where some guys took a late-80's vintage Vette to a shop where they sawed off the oil dipstick, welded the hole close and polished it over. Then they sent the typical blond cutie to drive it up to the local full-serve station where she asked the atendant to check the oil level for her. The resulting searches under the hood were pretty funny to watch!

There is no need to wait that long; the replacement part is $18 at Lordco.

Do you have by any chance the part number?

Give them the original Mitsubishi part #MC840219 and you will get what you need in 30 seconds. This is a very common part.
