speed at coquihala

Hi members,
I am wondering what is your l400 speed on the steepest hill on the Coquihalla hwy East bound just passed the tunnel? Mine is stock and is doing 85 km with the padel on the floor. Is this normal? temperature is always good though.
Cheers,
DC

I can maintain a 100km going up that stretch. My last trip over Kootenay Pass I had a bit lower power and when I floored it I got a extra blast of air coming through the vents. Not to derail this thread but anyone know what thats about?

Not normal.
Maybe leaky turbo or faulty EGR.

You may need a one of a few of the following done :
clean the injectors and adjust spray
new fuel filter
new air filter
clean or block EGR
Also you never want to climb that hill with the pedal to the floor for an extended period of time. Your EGT temps will rise significantly and eventually you'll blow the engine if you keep doing it regularly.
If you haven't already, I would recommend to install a pyrometer gauge to monitor you real temps when climbing. The stock temp gauge is okay but doesn't monitor your egt's.
Also you posted in the wrong section unless you are a registered Canadian dealer selling a Delica.

Oh sorry about the wrong posting and I don't know how to fix it yet
Thanks for the replies .yes I do expect somethings wrong. I haven't blank my egr yet . The air filter had done less than 20000km since I got the van ,so I assume it to be fine but thats the only filter I had not changed since then. Thank again everyone and I will change the filter as soon as I got one.
Also, have been thinking of installing a pyrometer and a boost gauge too.
BTW, why the egr will have affect the performance in this case ?
cheers,
DC

The valve in the egr gets clogged over time so instead of putting a little bit of exhaust back through it pumps a lot through. If you remove it and look inside you can see what I mean.

Just blanked off the egr. Have a check on the air filter and it actually has only just over 10000km on it. So I am hoping its the egr problem . Yes, Nick , I see what you mean when I look into the ports while I was taking it out

. The van had a deli tune in CVI last year around october and I only have put on about 10000km..I did remove the filter and test drive for a little while and I can hear air flows through so nicely...

One of two things.
On the back of the intake manifold is a spring loaded pressure release valve that will pop open if you have too much boost. Sounds like a loud 'PpppssssssssT!" and can force some air though the vents.
Or your air con / belts catches and pushes some extra air out

Sounds like the first one. Thanks.

Probably a silly question but are you pressing the button to disable overdrive while you're going up the coquihala?
My overdrive override button was broken and I had similar speed, 80ish km/h max and struggling, because the van was trying to go up the hill in overdrive. Now that the button is fixed for me, locking out overdrive has a much healthier feeling and can maintain 100 km/h up the coquihala and accelerate.

You don't want to climb with overdrive on = lower rpm's = lugging up the hill = higher EGT's
Overdrive off will bump up your RPM's = more torque up the hill = lower EGT's

Hi verticalgrian,
No I was not running on od. It was off. Thats why I think there is something not right. With the help of the replies, I now blended the EGR and upon examining the air filter, I found something. The housing was not sit on properly causing air leaking

coming into the system through the gooseneck area inside the engine compartment. That could be the reason of under power up the hill. I got to try it out later to confirm. Thanks for your input .

also when your going uphill you can used the overdrive
if not you only have 3 speed. that makes your rpm goes high
now beside this need proper tuning maybe some loose hose or other thing.
i dont think turbo as mostly L400 dont seems to have that problem
you only got 100,000 kms plus, did have 190,000 kms L400 not even have a single leak on it
they modified the l400 turbo already
but L300 yes its usually leaky diff design

Hi Mardy, thanks for your reply. You are saying going up a steep slope with OD on has more toque? I am not sure it is the case.

I found this is more rasonable .
Also, I try to see if there is any air leak in the system but prove to be difficult cos the fan is blowing so much air in the engine bay.

This is a completely common sense as jfarsang's article is 100% right.
