Just came across this very cool idea from a guy at the Overland Expo in Germany.
The two tires lift up when you open the door. Supported by extra struts.

For along while, i'm just wondering why You choose Delcia contrary to Transporter T3.
Unfortunately i never ever driven a 4WD T3, but one of my buddy own one.
It's seems very massive and volkswagen is generally a very reliable company.

Sometimes i feel that maybe a t3 was a better choice.... (that is a very strange feeling )
And my best friend has got a T4 Multivan and he always mesmerize me that volkswagen is the ultimate... blabla

Please clearing this feeling out of my mind, fexlboi please!

Syncros in good shape are VERY expensive in North America and beside more interior space and the better parts availability/larger community I don't see any benefits of a T3 compare to an l300.
To me it sounds more like many T3 owners switched to an l300 because they were not happy with the reliability.

By the way this carrier would work well on a Delica too.

Who needs a rear window? :)

Syncros are nice vans if you like Hiking or Walking...

You can build up a nice one...you just have to swap out most the parts first...

Wonder why it's mounted so high. That's a lot more weight up top to offset the cog.

I guess it's because of the pivot point up on the roof rack you don't want to have the weight all the way down. Otherwise you would need to lift a lot more weight and use bigger struts.

Why not just attach it at the bottom? It could fold down like a tailgate and double as a seat as well. Then it wouldn't block the window and keep the weight low. You could also have them open sideways (one to each side)

Both would be quite simple with a 3 receiver hitch...

If it was at the bottom and folded down, it would always be in the way. For those times one would like to use it as a seat, there would be all those other times one was trying to reach over it to get at the inside of the vehicle. If it swung-away to the side as well, that would work wonderfully.

Felix has hit the nail on the head: it's mounted high so it's weight is such that smaller struts can be used to lift it out of the way. Also, it doesn't look like it's attached to the door, it looks like it's attached to the frame around the door. Therefore, it's still a two-part process to open the rear door: lift the tires; lift the door.

Regardless, very nice and very slick. With a vehicle this size it's very difficult to find room for a spare tire, let alone two.

Finally, one of the reasons I never bought a VW van (of any kind) was due to all the maintenance stories I'd read about over the years. The cars seem to be okay, but put the same engine in the back of a box and suddenly it's a bleeding nightmare! Never did really find out why, but did not buy one just the same. Was very happy with my Delica and now just so with my Pajero. Thank you Mitsubishi!
