I haven't even attempted to replace my wheel studs (this afternoons project) but it can't be worse than what I just went through.
Steps leading to disaster...
1. Filled up with gas
2. Forgot to put cap back on
3. Noticed while turning onto freeway
4. Pulled over to side of freeway
5. Put trick in neutral with handbrake on while running
6. Locked and closed door
7. Put cap back on
8. Tried to get back into truck
9. Noticed wallet and phone were inside with keys
10. Looked for wire to break in
11. Ran to nearest gas station
12. Gas station had nothing useful
13. Ran to hotel
14. Was given a coathanger
15. Ran back to truck
16. 5 seconds of fiddling and I'm in
Phew

I wouldn't trust the stock e-brake with the engine running

It's very weak !

Is the engine still running on GAS?

I only trust the e-brake on flats and only when it's for a second and I'm close by (which I thought I would)
I should point out this was my mighty max and not my Delica.
Yes, it was running on GAS!

Ah, so GAS means you did this to the Mighty Max, not the Delica.
And the moral of the story is NEVER get in the habit of holding the door latch while closing the door, thus locking your door, Instead always ONLY lock the door with the keys (yeah it takes a couple seconds to do, but thus you can't do this again).
Christine.

Yes, it was the mighty max.
I never hold the handle up while closing the door (the truck doesn't have that safety feature).
Turns out trying to replace the studs was even more of a nightmare than this.

The moral of the story is NEVER leave a key in the car if you are getting out. If you absolutely need to get out for a moment without a key open the window! This is my habit. One more lesson I have learned: do not put a key in your swimming shorts when you go swimming.

The funny think is that I've locked the keys inside a lot and I never seem to learn. I now have a coathanger hidden so I can get in easily when I do it next

ditch the coathanger and be done with it. just get a 'hidden key' magnetic box and put a spare key in it. hide it anywhere under the pants of the Max and there's your monkey.

And don't forget to put the key in the magic box..

I kind of like the coathanger though. Given that the lock is sticky it takes about the same amount of time to get in with either one
