K & N E-2877 air filter

Just install the new filter. Seems to responds a little faster ,may be new against old ( 13900km ). Its nice cos its reusable through cleaning and oiling. It is half the size of the original.Sitting on the bottom half of the air box while the top is totally open. The cover of the box does fit onto it perfectly without any vibrasion. The E-2871 is same as stock but require transplanting of the top & bottom of the old filter onto it. The question is : Which one is right? Or Both are right ?
Cheers,
DC

The 2877 is a design that improves air flow GREATLY! and is the "specific" kn replacement for the l400 delica.
Great investment, well worth the $50 bucks!

Yes you can buy a cleaning kit at lordco or you can just use regular soap it works just as well

I use the E-2871, due to the fact that it has more than twice the cleaning area than the E-2877. I drive mostly gravel roads, so longer cleaning intervals are better for me. The top and bottom plates come off the old filter very easily with a heat gun, and then just have to be siliconed to the K&N.

make sure you use the K& N oil and a good bio degreaser or their cleaner as it's designed for their cotton mesh that is used in the filter

You need to oil it and let it dry before installing it, so make sure you've done that. Also, I would replace it for a paper/factory filter for off road use as it doesn't filter fine dust as much as you would think. This means trouble for your turbo.
Enjoy. Mine loves the K&N in the city/hwy. Clean it every other oil change and it will work well. Make sure to oil it and let it sit a day before re-installing for best results.

Don't worry David, you are about 20,000kms away from cleaning and oiling. I've been using kn filters for 15 years, and I still have an original in My truck. You dont have to let it "dry" because its oil...it will never "dry. Just wash the filter, then let it dry, then oil(outside air side) conservatively, then let stand long enough to spread evenly(whole filter the same red) then re install.
...as per instruction from kn sales rep(I used to sell them at a heavy duty parts store)

I would tend to disagree with that, as I can go a full year with a paper element air filter, but the K&N needs cleaning about every 2 months. 95% of my driving is on dusty gravel roads, and I have to think the K&N is plugging up faster because it is catching more of the fine dust, not less.

I am not the only one to notice this. I did some reading when originally purchasing the K&N and a couple threads on aussie forums noted similar results which is why I decided to check. A few weeks ago I drove about 100kms of dusty gravel and after removing the K&n I could wipe my finger through the dust after the filter... not a good thing. I also noticed some etching (right word?) on the turbo fins, so probably from dust since I've installed it. (this spring)
Since then I always switch to paper filter for camping/offroad and now no dust post filter..

that is why kn designed the 2877 as a 0ne peice, there is a huge chance of infiltration through the bracket being glued to the 2871. kn's always look dirty...the oil picks up so much fine particulate, but that being said...the filter media after the oil should never get to the point of clogging(20,00kms of good ol' BC off roading one summer). these filters are like variable rate coil springs, two rates of coil in one spring.
I am a proud kn user and even gave air raid (and amsoils filters) a try...but the kn is so much more reliable.
Im actually thinking of purchasing a few Dozen 2877's if any one is interested.
Brad.
