battery exploded

Friend of mine who owns a service shop was working on a customer's vehicle swapping out a battery that was giving low voltage readings.

Pulled off the terminal connectors and the battery blew up. The force of the explosion threw him backwards a good 4 feet and the neighbors heard the boom over 1km away.

Fortunately he had his arm in front of his face/body over the battery and is luck to be alive.

Black eye, concussion and he can't hear out of his left ear for a while the doc says.

Heads up to you guys. Batteries can be dangerous, even for professional mechanics.

This battery was not even a year old and the truck is a few years old. He's going to have it looked at by the battery co. The decal on the battery says that it is a factory reconditioned one. Not sure what that means in this case.

Something happened inside and it was just a brewing ticking time bomb.

Be safe !

Batteries make Hydrogen when charging....Blowing up is not unheard of (especially if charging high amps bubbles in the acid)...

Good to hear he will be okay, wish him a speedy recovery, he's very lucky indeed.

Keep us in the loop if more develops from the technical side.
