I'm caught between L300 technical and member trips here so general discussion it is...

I'm planning to leave on an around North America trip at the beginning of May. With my winter oil change looming I figured it would be a good time to stock up on filters. I know many of the shops around town offer discounts for buying in bulk. I'll be looking at getting 5-10 oil and air filters and 1-2 fuel filters. I'm looking for the 'good' ones and not the Hyundai cheap style ones. As these deals are not made very public I was wondering if anyone has recommendations on where I can find the best deals!?

Also, if anyone believes a bypass oil filter might be more cost effective I might be swayed into going that route as well.

I have had good dealings with Dave from Filter Distribution ( http://www.filterdistribution.com/oil-filters ). He can get me 4 of the Sure Filter Heavy duty filters (SFO-8532) for $11.05 each and shipping would be $37. Even with the shipping being so high it is still slightly cheaper and shipped directly to my door. Still better than some of the other "deals".

Two words for you: DO IT.

At the very least you will have your bypass oil filter paid for within the first 20,000 kms (depending on what one you get), and on your trip that will be quite easy. You'll also have to pack 1/2 to 1/3rd the number of filters and oil.

Do you have any suggestions for where to get a bypass filter or what type to get and how easy they are to install? It's definitely something ive been eyeing for a while.

Are you staying in Canada or heading south ?

Either way, you can pickup the Baldwin filters (best one's IMO) anywhere in NA.

Double the life expectancy of your engine with a bypass filter. Highly recommended.

I'm heading down the west coast, across the southern states, up the east coast and back through Canada. There will be a few zig zags in between as well. I assume you ask because the parts are cheaper there!?

The Baldwin filters are what are used for bypass or to replace what I currently have? I apologize for not being completely clear on how the bypass actually works.

Definitely sound intriguing. I've only been able to find install's done on L400's though. Is there a good place for mounting this on the L300's and is it simple to do with a tap and bit or is this going to be another one of my painful modifications? In theory this sounds great but I'm ok with paying some extra money in the long term if that's the route that will cause the least headaches. Also, if it's not a long install, could I not just save my money buying the tap and bit and have a shop install it for me instead?

Remove the air filter canister ('cause it's huge!) from behind the driver's wheel, install a K&N or something comparable, and you'll have plenty of room in that space to add a bypass filter, and a water-cooled intercooler (okay, I threw that one in there, but there just might be enough room). Plumbing/piping might be more laborious, but at least you'd have room for the intial placement.

I though k&N isn't supposed to be as good as the regular air filter in the L300's!? Is there no way to do the install without removing it?
