Enduring clicking sound...

Hi all,

When I turn the key on my Deli in the morning, I hear a clicking sound coming from under me, slightly behind and to the right. The sound comes every second or two, goes on for a little while, and then stops eventually (no more than 2-3 minutes). Is this normal? I've been doing some research on clicking on the forum and it might be the glowplug based on what I read, but maybe not... no one seems to be reporting exactly this.

One other piece of info, not sure if it is related - the other day I went out and my batteries seemed to be dead. Or, I just couldn't get the engine to turn. door lights, etc. still went on, though. Later in the day it just turned on with no problem. It has been a bit colder, but like Island cold (around 0 degrees). Feedback?

Thanks,

Luis

the clicks you are hearing is the from the glow plug control unit = normal

what condition are your batteries in ? old/new ?

Clicking is normal, but in my experience clicking every second or two isn't . When mine's cold and I 1st turn the key on I believe there's a click immediately (solenoid engaging current to GPs) then about 5-7 seconds later another click (solenoid cutting current to GPs), at which point I immediately turn the key further to engage the starter motor. It always starts instantly (but runs rough/low RPM and puffs whitish/blueish smoke a little for minute or so, unless it's like > 20c out). For maybe a minute or so after, as it runs, I can hear the solenoids clicking on and off in seemingly regular intervals of maybe 3 seconds on (current to GPs), 10 seconds off (no current), 3 seconds on...etc. The smoke occurs directly in relation to these clicking intervals (so assumed when no current to GPs, but I haven't hooked-up a meter to confirm this). I've the dual solenoid "Super Quick Glow System" found in the '91/xx --> '93/xx (can't remember months) models that, I believe, sends dual voltages to the GPs (12v or 11v - not sure which, and 6.2v). So if you have the single-solenoid 11v setup in older & newer models, your clicking frequency may differ by design. BTW - I'm in Vic. too, so we're talking starting at similar temps.

Blackberry, you have a 6.2V Super Quick Glow System I mentioned earlier in other thread.
Good point, very informative. :-)

Luisito, it seems that your control system is about to die sooner or later.

Could also be the temp sender. When it goes the ECU gets confused and clicks on and off.

It could just be that it's cold out and your glow plug system is working properly, like it's supposed to.

Our 93's GP system clicks several times after starting when it is cold. Doesn't do it when the motor is warm. It has worked this way since we got it 3 yrs ago. Always starts right up, even when -30 albeit, it is plugged in.

Sounds like I'm dealing with something normal, then...

My batteries aren't that old. I bought the van from Glen up in Coombs (it was his) and he told me they were relatively new - not sure what that means exactly tho.

Thanks for the feedback.
