Need L300 Original Purchase Price (MSRP) for Insurance!

Does anyone know the original purchase price of an L300? Say, from 1991 to 1994, various models? (Base, Chamonix, etc.) I've been searching all over the place for this information. Hopefully someone can help me out.

Background info:

I'm in Ontario and I'm planning on buying an L300 some time soon. I've started getting insurance quotes just to see what the damage will be. (And just to make sure I can even get insurance! - apparently pretty tough in Ontario). One of the companies needs to know the original purchase price of the vehicle I plan to buy. Of course this raises a few other questions: convert price from Yen using current exchange rates when the MSRP is 15+ years old?, Account for inflation?, Why the hell this even matters?, etc. Seems like an arbitrary number, but anyway, there is no point arguing with an insurance company. I just need to give them a number so they can give me a number. (It sounds like a convenient excuse to charge rates based on a 40K vehicle instead of a 10K vehicle.)

Any help would be appreciated!!

Hmmm, not a usual question, I don't recall that it was ever discussed on here. Here are 2 websites of locals Vancouver area dealers who have good online information with CURRENT photos and prices, and who both also specialize in selling to people in other parts of Canada. Mardy at Amazing Autos http://www.amazingautoimports.com/phpwcms/contact.phtml or Stephen at Rising Sun http://www.rs-import.ca/index.php . Christine.

I spent a long time googling this out of curiosity. I ended up finding a site that had the cost of each vehicle, the cost of each add-on etc. Unfortunately I don't remember the site but I can tell you that my l300 super exceed with it's extra's, converted at the exchange rate around December of last year came out to somewhere between $75,000-80,000 new.

NXSKI: Does that price include the seven roof boxes, batman rims, roof basket, 200L of diesel in plastic jugs, concert hall folding speaker cabinet, and of course the Panini Maker? :-D

nxski must have been using his contracting quote calculator that randomly applies a value multiplier between 2-10x the true value of something. :-D

I was going to suggest a couple million yen, but of course, that's 20 years ago.

They really are trying to make it difficult to register non-NAMPOS in Ontario, aren't they? Why would they care what the cost was 20 years ago? Why not the cost of what you paid for it - that's the replacement cost.

Every time I read a story like this, I'm grateful for ICBC. Yes, I just typed that!

I'm just going by the numbers in the website I found (it had a built-in converter). Maybe it was accounting for inflation!? The range of prices, according to this potentially unreliable source was 40,000-85,000 for base model - superexceed fully loaded

There's no way for the insurance companies to find out the exact value or do anything with it so you might aswell give them the lowest price you can find a new Delica for. :-D

Thanks everyone for the help! (And the laughs).

I checked out those websites. The model that I'm looking at buying came up with a price of 2254K JPY and had ~$18,700 in brackets. (Probably USD). (Converted when?)

With today's conversion, 2254K JPY = ~$30,000 USD = ~$30,000 CAD, a difference of more than 10K based on different exchange rates over time. This shows the utter futility of this exercise. The original purchase price is a completely arbitrary number! I guess if this number was going to mean anything at all, it should be converted from JPY to CAD using exchange rates at the time of original sale. But that seems kinda stupid too.

HOWEVER, I'm happy to report that I spoke to the insurance company again and I suggested that a professional appraisal would be a much more meaningful number to base the insurance on. (Of course, they had to check with the underwriter if this would be OK). They called me back and agreed to accept an appraisal instead of the MSRP! Why this wasn't the original request baffles me, but whatever. I then suggested they try an appraisal value of $10K just for quotation purposes, and the quote came out to $230/month. Still way too high. (Clean record, 30yrs old, no collision).

I guess I'll keep shopping. (That was only my first attempt at insurance). Let the fun begin...

Who are you shopping with? The Personal insures RHD, but you have to be in elligable under one of their group rates... There are quite a few for different employers/unions/professional associations, so check their web site.

Got another quote. This time from Desjardins. $98/month! SWEET! No mention of MSRP from them. Just an appraisal. Now we're good to go. :-D
