Jump starter w compresssor

i am still learning about batteries and such but would like som opinions on products such as this http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4 ... ?locale=en or the motomaster eliminator power packs. would this start the van? when ski touring could you leave this in the van for a couple days and still have it work? also was thinking about possibly hooking a solar panel to this to maintain charge in the cold? any other thoughts

yes...yes...and yes... I have one of these and it's brilliant... if you can find a plug in that connects to the charging terminal a solar pannel should work... as long as theres light I've left my van for two days in the mountains and started up no problem..... However I use synthetic oil 0-30/40 and have good glow plugs HTH

I keep one in my Starwagon. 600CCAs should start a Delica. I also use it as an inverter for miscellaneous electric applications, charging walkie-talkies, &c., in fact, if I park and decide to listen to music in the great expanse of nature, beneath the sheltering sky ~ I can use my key in the ignition and run off the wagon's batteries..... or........ I plug the Eliminator into the cigarette plug and run the stereo from the other side of the ignition without fear of running down the wagon's batteries or having to deal with the "key is still in the ignition" chime, which is likely just out of tune with the music.

Also, if the engine is running then the wagon's batteries will charge the Eliminator via the cigarette plug.

No....no.....no. Personally I do not like them, basically you forget about these the battery goes dead and they end up in landfill. It looks as if it has 500ca if in Florida and for about 3 seconds! It is Cold Cranking Amps you are looking for...It weighs in at 17lbs...A proper battery weighs in at 30+Lbs and does not have jumper cables, compressor, weight...Just power to start.

I have come back to cars at night at -35 and just got them to start...I have learned. An air compressor will not help in this situation. This would be like hooking up a motorcycle battery to give you that extra.

Diesel = cycle glow plugs 3 times 60+ amps for 15 seconds, fire the starter 200+ amps, keep glow plugs cycling for a few minutes till combustion chambers hot enough to keep running.

If you want a second battery add a second battery with an isolator (jay does really clean installs of these).... A proper second battery will be charged by the alternator and used by the vehicle giving you long life and battery with value to recyclers.

Make sure you run synthetic oil, good glows, and well tuned and the diesel should fire every time...

If you are leaving it for a long time I would add a disconnect switch on the battery to disconnect it so that power does not get bleed off from few things with ghost power (radio, clock etc)...

How cold are you leaving it and how long??? Interior -30 or lower then it might be time to invest in a littler generator to power a block heater, oil heater, and battery warmer (in the old days they just made a small fire and pushed the vehicle oil pan over it ).

for overnight cold if you don't have shore power for a block heater, insulating the batteries, fresh wire from battery-starter, 0w30/40, and an isolator to disconnect your battery completely while sitting overnight in case of any tiny electrical drains.

those consumer rated battery boosters you see in crappy tire and like stores are good for gas/cars/small trucks but for diesels that need more cranking power in the winter, they are best used as an accessory to jumping, not as a primary jump source that you are depending on.

If you do need an emergency jump for your diesel when your battery is drained, the cranking sucks major juice and the consumer packs will not have the capacity for a real life full jump from dead batteries.

This is the one I carry with me in the winter. It's essentially a dedicated HD battery in a carry case.

My dad bought it about 8 years ago and it has never failed boosting his duramax, our delica's and RV's.

You can find it much cheaper locally if you shop around. we paid $240 in abbotsford.

And I've found its just not enough to boost the engine (left the lights on at the ski hill)

I've contemplated getting a genny for it, probably will eventually. In the meantime we installed a remote starter for it, and programmed it for a timed start. Every 2 hours, and it runs for 12 minutes. It will cycle like that for 24 hours (got it for overnight ski trips and whatnot). We've had really good results with it...

Will likely upgrade to dual batteries soon.

This would be a second battery for accesories right? ie heater, lights ect (also need inverter?)? this is also something that we are considering but can wait on right now (how do i contact jay). The main concern is being able to start the van after it has been sitting for a week at some mountain pass.
