Hello everyone, I am new to Mitsus, and new to this forum. I have just picked up a 94 Pajero 2dr with the 2.8l. So far I love the truck.
Now here is my issue. I was getting belt/Pulley squeal originally only when the truck was cold. But today on a short trip, the squealing got quite load. I pulled over to take a look and noticed the pulley on the bottom right is not turning at the same speed as the rest. It was starting and stopping. The motor seems to be running fine, but I really don't want to risk hurting anything else. Can someone please let me know at least which pulleys are on the bottom, and really any help and info you can. If someone has a diagram for the pulley setup on the 4m40 that would be great. I have ordered a haynes manual, but I have no information as of yet.

that's your air conditioning pump.

it cycles on and off depending on what settings you have in the heater controls inside the cab.

if it's not on, it will not be turning. if it's on, it will be turning as it's cycling on and off. similar to a clutch.

Thanks for the info. I turned the climate control off, and haven't heard the squeal since. I think the pulley on the pump is starting to seize up. The stopping and starting I described was not so much cycling on and off as it was the pulley grinding to a stop and struggling to turn. I will have it looked at during my next service next week.

it could be the belt slipping as well. check that before you dive into the compressor.

Mine just started to SQUEAL the other day. Butch just cut it off, that way he said the clutch will not engage. I just disengage the AC when I turn on the climate control. That way when its time to look at the compressor it might just be the clutch replacement, which I'm told is far cheaper than replacing the pump.

So you would recommend to cut the bottom belt. That would the allow me to use the Heater portion of the climate control without running the aircon pump. Seems logical to me.

Update:
I replaced all three belts, They were stretched and cracking. Everything is working great now, even the AC. Not that I will need it any time soon.
