More fun and games...

So...lately when I've gone to turn it over it's been acting a little squirrelly with dash lights flickering a bit, etc... BUT running fine and starting up fine.

Last night the tac started jumping around etc...still running fine. Get it home, go to shut it off and it keeps running! Could literally take the key out of the ignition! Finally it shut down...not sure if it was anything I did - BUT - now it wouldn't turn back over. The starter was clicking away so she's getting power and those are brand new batteries.

WTF!

Someone before I owned it installed an auto car starter which I've never used and not sure if it still works. Actually would like to take it out because I'm betting dollars to donuts that's the source of the problem. Stereo lost power shortly after buying it as well.

What's going on with this thing - anyone seen anything like this before? Does anyone have a wiring diagram?

I did come across this helpful tip around forcing an engine shut off...That said I thought the IP was in the engine...where is this button.

I'm still thinking this is electrical but just in case I get it going again this morning BUT if it decides not to shut off again maybe this button on the injector pump will work.

I think you are talking about injection pump solenoid like pic.
If gone, no shut off or no start.

If you have a remote auto starter that is malfunctioning, it will keep the engine running and not start. Exactly the symptoms you are having. Sounds like it wasn't wired in properly or is not working as it should. Remove it and test before you get into the mechanics.

It is unlikely but possible the remote starter has gone into quick stop mode. It is a feature designed to allow you to remove the key from the ignition and hop into a store or something, while the vehicle keeps running. If you have the remote for the RS on your keychain, it may be possible you engaged this mode.

No I've never used the remote starter...neither had the guy I bought it from almost a yr ago. I'm not even sure what I did with the fob...drawer somewhere...

jfarsang...would that explain all the odd behaviour like the tac not working properly. As in something is shorting something out? And I've been wanting to take it out anyway...hopefully that's not a big deal.

The engine not turning off sounds like a turbo timer? Was it a complete system that was installed or just the auto start? If you tap the brakes will it shut off? How long did it run for before finally shutting off? If you're not using it you might as well clip the wire and see if that helps.

They told me it has a turbo timer as well now that you mention it...

I'm not sure what the timer / auto start looks like...I have an idea as there's something hanging from below on the driver's side that has a number of buttons on it.

I can't remember how long it was running for before it shut off on it's own...couple minutes... And I'm not sure if I did anything specific to shut it off.

Main thing is now I can't start it... Just clicking noise from the starter. That's not a starter issue is it??

My kit has an imobilizer, alarm, turbo timer, auto start, power locks. If your wasn't functional and then started working that could explain your symptoms. If I open my van with the key and put the key on the ignition to try and start it nothing will happen (immobilized). What I have to do is use the keyless remote to disarm the vehicle before I can start it. If you can find that fob of yours you might want to try playing around with it. Also, take a look at the buttons below the dash to try and figure out what they do.

I'd rather just find this thing, trace it back to it's root and yank the thing out.

The squirrelly behavior I was getting before that tells me something electrical is up. As mentioned in the original post the tachometer was jumping all around a bit...truck was driving fine despite that.

Maybe they got power from the tach and there is a loose connection!? You're probably best to yank the thing out anyways.

I am not 100% sure.
But if your tachometer jumping around before this happening, I am leaning some issue on your IP ( something is related to rpm inside IP , don't remember though ).

what voltage is the batery at?

I cannot remeber if it takes 12volts to turn off or needs 12volts to keep running (fuel shut off).

if it needs 12volts to turn off:
I think the alternator might have died, battery got to low to turn off, and now it won't start. check battery voltage jump leave cables on see if shuts down.

Go back to your very first symptom.... flickering dash lights .... this is always the Delica alternator crying for help. As the alternator dies, it can affect everything electrical, especially any alarms and turbo timers etc as the electrical current is not as pure as the fancy electronics need. Dying alternator can also kill batteries and starter, so get it fixed. Any good alternator rebuild shop can do it, just have them rewind it as is .... do not get fancy and ask them to increase the amperage or other wierdness. Your only hassle is undoing and removing the alternator ... not sure if pajero is easier to do it from underneath (it is on L300), small hands better... do find the posts on how to do it (Ithinnk someone did a L300 photo essay a couple years ago). Then you just take it to the shop, 200$ to rebuild alternator. Christine.

This is my alternator removal thread, if you take your time and always hold the alternator while removing bolts it shouldn't be too problematic.
