Interest in Kinetic rope group buy? - Delay...

My brother-in-law is in the rope wholesale/manufacturing business, and I am getting him to make me up something along the lines of this:

http://www.masterpull.com/item.cfm?itemid=39016

I picked this size/diameter as a compromise of breaking strength to bulkiness/stowage.

These ropes are very neat to watch in action; you could practically extract a D-8 Caterpillar out of a mud pit with your Delica, with reduced shock on all components concerned.

As you can see on the website, these retail for around $110 plus shipping/duty/etc., but if the one he makes me turns out well, I'll ask him if he is up to make a batch; probably cheaper that way. I'll find out what the final cost per foot/unit would be and post back.

Anybody out there interested? And any requests on different size/length? If it comes down to it, they'll likely all be of the same rope size (could be different lengths), but I'm open to suggestions.

I'm interested as well. Put me down for one and lets see what happens with the price.

What he said.

Tony, have they made these before?

Regardless, put me down for one if it happens.

He has all of the tools and equipment for doing the proper eye-loops, stitching, etc.

He is used to making all kinds of custom ropework, and this sort of thing is very common in smaller diameters for fall-arrest gear. His comment was that it was not a big deal for him.

The type of rope like what is in the MasterPull product is apparently a standard type of rope; my brother-in-law can order it wholesale from his manufacturer. I think a typical full roll of rope (lowest unit cost) is 500 feet.

What I'm envisioning is if we can get enough interest at a particular size (rope diameter) for him to order a whole roll, then he can make up individual units for a fixed cost to put in the loop splices at each end (mostly labour) plus $x per foot for the rope.

That way you can order one as short or as long as you like. No difference to him.

I'll know more details once he finishes up one for me. Maybe someone in the Vancouver area here can help me test it out 8-)

So I got my 20-foot tester rope from my brother-inlaw. And he did a great job on it. But...

Unfortunately, the one he made me was exactly the *opposite* of what I had described to him. It turned out to be an ultra-high modulus, zero-stretch, 40,000-lb break strength, synthetic light weight but tough as steel, rip-your-bumper-off-if-you-took-a-running-yank like the guys in the video.

So I'm getting him more specs, but he's pretty swamped at the moment, so it's looking more likely to be in the New Year. :-(

I post this in case anyone is waiting on one as a potential Xmas present.

Tony.

I'm good with that Tony. Besides, I didn't tell my wife that I was buying myself a Christmas present anyway. :-D

Thanks for your effort Tony.
Still interested in the New Year for probably 3 ropes.

Happy Holidays!

why not just buy the masterpull one?

The US military has a contract with them for the kinetic ropes. If you want something that can handle that extreme pulling, tugging, heavy weight and depend on it, I would go with the masterpulls.

All it takes is one or two vehicle saver pulls and the $120 pays for itself right there.
