1) It doesn't work. The methods they use to block domains have already been circumvented. Every single digital rights management method invented has been circumvented, and every network shut down on the internet and the services that preceded the internet have been replaced just as quickly by another solution. And in the end even if they took away the web, we'll always have SneakerNet.
2) There is no evidence of losses by the entertainment industry to piracy. Studies of media consumers found that heavy copyright infringers are also heavy media consumers. That is, stealing media encourages you to buy more media. Further, heavy infringers access a lot of material but also discard a lot (after all, there is a whole lot of crap to sift through). They would not risk a purchase on much of the downloaded content. Also important to note, few of the high income target market users are satisfied by low resolution pirated copies. They want original quality or else they will just skip it and pay. Furthermore, a big chunk of "piracy" is users accessing media they already have a license to. This all disproves everything that the media corps have been telling lawmakers when trying to convince them to implement stricter intellectual property enforcement laws.
3) Who cares about US laws? Well they are pressuring the Gov't of Canada - oops, sorry, The Harper Government {TM}. Anyway, here's some more immediately relevant reading for kanuckistanis:
