If you want to get rid of those stains, try Krud Kutter (Home Despot sells it), worked like a charm on mine.

Mark, those bars would never stop a bull, we call em' bambi bars...Made you look!
Thanks for the advice Schwa, Googled it, found it's biodegradable and not sold at Wallmart - two things we look for in our household products. Will give it a try, though from the pictures I've seen of your vehicles ours are no where near as clean as yours. You sort of have a thing for white vehicles don't ya?

White is supposed to be fairly visible, so it's somewhat of a safety thing, although bright red is better, and bright yellow a close second... I've driven a yellow van and white looks much better, except for the dirt factor. I also really like how the black around the windows of the white Delicas gives it a sleeker look.
As far as clean goes... trust me, 90% of the time it's dirty (especially the back) but when it's clean I take a bunch of pictures.
This photo was taken before krud kutter but after I'd used car washing stuff and "glass plus" ammonia based cleaner:
And after the krud got kut

How much do you have to sand it and what kind of paint do you use?
Thanks

Actually, yellow is best, white second. Red is good in daylight, but at night it disappears entirely. The fluorescent yellow/green they used on firetrucks for a while is the most visible. They now use it on some road signs, esp. for schools zones and such. Ugly as sin, but sure gets your attention.
Having headlights on makes even more difference. I used to have grey cars as well as maroon. I always figured on hazy days on back roads the grey was invisible. Proved it recently when I parked my grey Caprice on a gravel road. Search and rescue plane didn't see the car until AFTER they spotted me wearing a fluorescent yellow jacket standing beside it!
I also once parked a maroon Subaru in the shade under a tree in an open field and watched a military unit exercise for about an hour before driving away. The sentries got s**t for not having noticed a vehicle parked in plain sight 200 metres away.
I love reading about and practicing camouflage and the psychology of vision.

The bars aren't painted yet, but we kinda like the response we are getting without them. Surprisingly in a small town, people get accustomed to seeing a vehicle regularly - then one change and all of the sudden everybody's gawking at it like it's something new.
It also makes the front end look higher too, and that's the new comment we get often now - "wow, that things high of the ground".
