Help with a black exhaust smoke issue?

okay, here's my current delica problem. A 96 Delica Jasper l400 that has suddenly started to lug when I step on the accelerator along with a lot of clicking from the engine area. The van then takes off with a burst of black smoke which clears then emit s more clouds of black smoke each time the gears shift (automatic).

This is making me nervous and I would like to resolve this issue, but don't know why this is happening.

Also, I live on the Sunshine Coast and would like to know if there are any diesel mechanics in the area that work on Delicas

Have you checked the air filter? Black smoke is unburned diesel going out the tail pipe. This is caused by not enough air or too much diesel in the mixture. I would start with the simple stuff, like the air filter.

Falco.

that sounds like a timing issue. If you're on the sunshine coast, the best route would be to take the ferry over to coombs country auto.

Hi doodah,
Thanks for having chosen us for your L400 repair.
As we dicussed earlier, New IP main seal along with O-rings replacement, tune up, new Hyundai 11V glow plugs, new wiring, new glow plug relay, EGR blanking solved all problem for hard starting , lots of black smoke and lack of power.
We guarantee all jobs we did for a year.

Besides those, we found out water pump was leaking a bit and coolant expansion bottle was leaking as we replaced them with new ones.

Happy New Year!

Thanks.

Rising Sun were very helpful giving me a loaner during the time of the repairs and meeting me at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. Not to mention the fast turnaround time just before Xmas.

Car is running much, much better after their repairs.

Taking the Delica on a short road trip between Xmas and New Years so will have a longer test during that time.

I'll keep you posted....

doodah,
try to chip this in, usually th emost common problem with L400 is egr valve.
if this is block. either you change it with the new one, replacement or original one are ok to used.
usually if you have problem with your if pump, only issue is in the morning start an dlittle bit low on power
again depends on how bad is this. sometime the fuel filter is clog also;
the black smoke issue for l400 usually the injection pump if they rebuild this pump in japan and out of timing.
not all jap. mechanic do the timing and set up th einjection pumpo right.
sometime the make and set up retarded and the engien dont runs good.
just pasing you my own experience.
and mostly 90% is egr valve you can block it make it better to run. it pass air even when its block,
sometime when using egr valve that is working sometime or not it fail air care.
did fix many of this L400 and got all the figure what the problem thru my experience on this L400.
my mechanic dont notice .
i test and drive this vehicle to figure it out. then when its the egr is faulty then either replace it or block it.
then your block smoke is gone. another problem is if you turbo ia leaking or not working good.
if owner dont do change oil more often another way of having this problem.
hope this help you to solve your problem in the near future:
Cheers;
Mardy

Van is running great, more power, starts REAL easy on cold, wet mornings. So I'm happy.

New batteries, EGR blanked, relay/plugs replaced and re-built pump.

my Jasper is the green one with grey here and there. Lots of big Jasper decals. The one with hay and chicken feed in it.
