To qualify for the Ultimate Delica Geek of the Year award, I'm thinking about modernizing by mounting the following Tablet PC unit in the Deli:

This will allow for GPS navigation, as well as checking eMail when you can find a wireless hotspot (like the Payless in Tofino), and you can use it as your MP3 player and watch movies.

A perhaps more interesting option would be to couple it with a camera mounted on the passenger side mirror to assist with passing vehicles (see http://www.vivotek.com/products_ip7151.htm for one option).

There are various options, such as the PTZ wireless cameras with a remote control and 10X optical zoom, the challenge with this being figuring out how to theft-proof the mount. THis would look pretty cool on the roof of the Deli

In which case you'd need a PTZ camera with 10X zoom like this one:

The pan/tilt/zoom function that can be controlled through the Internet or the included IR remote control extends the camera practicability and application. Users of VIVOTEK PZ6114/6124 can easily access it via an Internet Explorer browser, receiving synchronized video&audio from anywhere anytime."[/quote]

that looks like a nice compact system... I've helped my friend install a few in his cars over the years, much more ghetto, but very functional!

i was looking for a new deck to go with a new speaker system im looking for,but its hard with the deli deck holder being SO big.plus anything with blue lights or to many nobs wouldnt really match the dash it has already.

The cost I can comment on as I had to wholesale source most of this stuff last winter for a project I was assigned at work:
ASUS R2H TABLET PC, CEL M ULV 900MHz, I910GML, 768MB DDR2, 60GB, 7" WVGA TOUCHSCREEN WITH INFOPEN, XPT $965.60
ASUS R2HV TABLET PC, CEL M ULV 1.0GHz, I910GML, 1GB DDR2, 80GB, 7" WVGATOUCHSCREEN WITH INFOPEN, VHP $1247.60

The PTZ Camera with 10X zoom was about $650.00 last spring, and the dome enclosure was about $350.00. So yes, you're looking at $2K for this project. Another concern I'd have is the latency of that camera. I have one I use for home surveillance that is similar without the zoom. When I bring it up via the internet there is a time lag that would not be acceptible if you're using it to determine if you should pass that semi trailer in front of you. However the lag may be due to the internet, and I'm hoping that if you can address it directly through WiFi (or wired direct for that matter), the latency issue will disappear.

Night Driving & Wildlife: If you drive rural highways at night with very little traffic and lots of wildlife, like Hwy 93S from Banff to Radium where there are literally dozens of deer on the road, then this system could use IR to great advantage. On eBay there are Hong Kong companys sellling high power IR flood and spotlights. As the CCD's in these cams can sense IR well, you could mount an IR lightbar on your roof which would allow you to see objects on the road for a considerable distance when there is no oncoming traffic.

BTW, another side benefit of this system, when your Deli is parked at home and if you have a wireless router already set up there, you'll have a security system as well. When you consider you'll pay $600+ for a Garmin Nuvi just for navigation, maybe the Asus UMPC system is not so bad after all.
