Anyone know the weight of the rear hatch? I'm in Calgary and trying to get some replacement struts made locally. They need to know the length of the originals struts and the weight of the hatch.

consider taking off your old ones and overnight 'em for a rebuild.

This guy really knows his stuff; his opinion that OEM Mitsu ones are very well built, and that the few worn bits that he replaces makes 'em better than new.

Fairly reasonable, and he claims to guarantee them forever. "The rest of your vehicle will wear out before they do." Two years ago and they still work great.

Hey Tony- do these rebuilt struts hold the door up again? I have a chrome Jaos ladder so can they be recharged to take that into account. I am so tired of hitting my head on the door!

Tell him what you have additional on the rear hatch and he will re-charge the struts to suit a heavier load. Super nice guy.

They are skookum shocks once this guy is done with 'em.

I added a piece of 1/2 " cutting board under my top hinge to raise my L400 hatch a little more. Trace out your top hinge and cut out with a jig saw or(?). Lengthen the bolts by a 1/2 inch too.

Any thicker a shim and the tail gate won't close.

You still need a re&re on the hinges if the tail gate won't stay up . Don't forget to brace the tailgate up when you remove the hinges.

Also don't prop up your hatch with a stick leaning against the plastic molding of the rear tail light. Even the slightest touch of the hatch will break it and then you might be inclined to blame another party for falling into the trap you set.

Just in case you still need the info, I ordered some struts for mine the other day. Mine's a high-roof with a Terzo and standing on some scales holding the tailgate above my head with the struts disconnected, I found I'd put on 22kgs . The strut length extended is 770mm and retracted 620mm. I ordered 20mm longer to get a bit more height (the tailgate will go up quite a bit before it fouls the bodywork).

Went for the adjustable force type which come with a huge amount of pressure which you slowly bleed out until they are the force you require. I'm going for 'unexpected uppercut to the chin'

I'll let you know how they work out.

Fitted the struts today and the extra 20mm of strut length equates to an extra 20cm of tailgate opening height. The extra pressure means it lifts the tailagate and ladder easily all by itself.

You could flip pancakes off the back of that !!!
