blinkers on the fritz

Hi there,
My righthand indicator/blinker seems to be malfunctioning somehow. When I try to turn right and flick it on it kind of stutters and stays on, does not flash at all. Does anyone have a wiring print that might let me know what colour I am looking for to check?
thanks:)

Just to clarify, you have checked the bulbs right?

try turning on your van, put on the signal. feel up under your steering wheel where your fuses are.near your fuses you will find the blinker that is clicking away, take it out, check the terminals to make sure they are clean and not in bad shape. then post about your results

ok, so to the first post, I did check the bulbs and both seem to work just fine, but good question.
To the second post, I dug around by the fuse box and pulled off these four little plug like things that resemble mini-oil filters (please forgive my lack of mechanical knowledge, ) that someone else told me might me the blinker controls....not so, nothing happened even when I took them all out.
So then I did as you said, I turned the van on and stuck as much of me as would fit under the steering wheel and listened, now I can definitely hear the malfuntioning "thing" but I can't quite pinpoint the exact location (there are a whole bunch of little boxes with things plugged into them under there and no amont of jiggling seems to do anything). I know this may be a whole lot to ask but if you find yourself with some free time, maybe you could take a photo of the 'thing' in question and email it to me? If not just a description would be fantastic. I make a mean pot of borscht if you are looking for some inscentive.
thanks again for trying to help...I feel like I might be giving delica owners a bad name with my sporadic signalling...and that certainly something I do not want to do
cheers
sarah

Hi, sorry i cant send you a pict, Im delica-less right now,but try this; turn the ignition to ON with out turning on the engine, put your signals on, put your hand up near your fuses and you will actually be able to FEEL the clicking of the blinker modual. dont just smack stuff around, find the one that is clicking with the signal and you should have found your problem, take it out, see if there is corrosion on it, you may be able to clean it and keep using it, or you may need to replace it.
Thats the best i can do over the net for ya. hope that helps

I haven't had my Delica long enough to know Delica-unusual aspects. That being said ...
You don't say if your left blinker works fine. And do your 4-ways work? Most vehicles use 1 blinker unit for both turn signals, and 1 blinker unit for the 4-ways.
Also, most vehicles, if a bulb is burned out, the lights come on but don't blink with turnsignal. But the 4-ways will just ignore the burnt-out bulb and flash the rest.
So, if the left blinker works, then it isn't the flasher unit. Check with the 4-ways to see if all the bulbs work as they should.
Most flasher units look like a half-length 35mm film can, either metal or glass. If you can figure out which is the turn signal, and which is the 4-way then you can (on most vehicles) swap them and see what happens. Another way to narrow down the problem.
Hope this helps.

Hi Toadintheholde,
Did you solve the problem? My left blinker is on the blitz now and seems to have the same symptoms as yours. Right one works if I haven't used the left but once I've used the left it stays on then the right doesn't work. Also the hazard lights make them all stay on too.
I'm trying to figure out which module it is, the sound is coming from behind the glove box and I can see 3 modules under there.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Kuan

I have to question the location on this one... the signal "clicking" sound in the delicas definitely comes from the left side of the vehicle, somewhere behind the glovebox I suspect.

yep you are right, the box turned out to be up high on the left side of the van, just before the passanger door opening.....not near the steering wheel or column, at least that's where I found mine:)
I ended up finally taking my van to Marigold auto and he brought a new blinker box down from Parksville for me, getting that fixed and having a pinion leak checked only cost me $60 so buying a new one can't be that expensive. From the sounds of it you have the same problem as I had and what you need is a new box all together, but you could try taking it to an electronics repair place and see what they have to say?:)
hope this helps...good luck!

Sooo.... if you don't blink, you might still miss something?
Sorry... couldn't resist.
A very good post tho. A common problem with ALL vehicles that with a little knowledge could save money - even for the non-mechanical folks. The part is usually very cheap (not sure for Delicas - but likely) and a couple minutes in Can Tire parking lot and you're away.

Hi,
I've taken mine out. Its in behind the glove box on the left. Mine was the top most of 3 little electrical boxes in there. My question now is, is this a flasher unit or a relay?
Thanks.

is this a flasher unit or a relay?
technically it is a relay, however it's function is a "flasher unit"
when dealing with car people call it a flasher unit or they get confused...
when dealing with electronics people call it a relay or they assume you are clueless.

Well, I finally got this fixed now thanks to Glen at CC Autos in Coombs. The relay is behind the glovebox on the left highest one up (of 3). It was impossible to get out but when I finally did I took it to both Napa and Lordco with no luck.
Glen was a hero and while he didn't have any in stock, he actually pulled his own out of his van and sent it down to me on the Greyhound bus.
THank you Glen.

we are trying in vain to locate our flasher unit on our van, doesn't appear to be behind the glove box anywhere. Anyone out there with an 89 deli that can help us out? We have a new unit thanks to Glen, but can't figure out where it goes (keep it clean folks!)
