Black smoke

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Black smoke

Post by lettereleven »

Just made it up to Whistler - as I drive I noticed a unnatural amount of black smoke while going up hill. It usually went away at higher rpm. I haven't noticed it at all while driving in the city.

I am not sure what I need to investigate to sort it out. If someone can point me in the right (or possible) direction that would be awesome.

Possiblly?
Glow plugs
Injectors
Time for a seafoam rinse

Not sure if it matters, but it's been a bit rougher on morning starts lately.

Thanks ever so much

Thanks for the strategy. I've already bookmarked the post on the sea foam and had planned on doing it next oil change. I'll just bump it up to next weekend.

As a Seafoam alternative - which I *do* think is great stuff BTW - if you really want to give your injectors a flush, buy some pure isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol (not the London Drugs variety), run your fuel tank down low and take 'er for a good highway run after adding it:

Thanks guys. I will try the IPA first as its free. Then seafoam and new oil, fuel and air filters -just changed oil filers 2 weeks ago so I feel badly dumping it all out.

If none of that works I will have to take it in.

Thanks for the ongoing help.

Thanks again for the help. Last week I did a run with IPA and it really helped! No nasty black smoke anymore.

I also thought that checking the air filter might be worthwhile (suggested in other threads). Just changed it this morning. Yikes - pretty nasty.

Passed!

Except perhaps less-than-great mileage as judged by AirCare (17L/100km)

what is a natural amount of black smoke?
This is my first diesel, and i get it taking off from a light, or when i gun it to merge, i see a plume of black.
Also i have a bit of white smoke at start up, but a puff and it's gone and idles normally.

The puff at start is normal. A diesel drives differently from a gas vehicle. You can't just slam your foot down to accelerate. Try accellerating slower and see if that black cloud goes away. Also, I'd recommend blanking your egr if you haven't already, and changing your air filter.

Diesel smoke colours and causes: http://www.dieselbombers.com/general-di ... -what.html

Black, in your case is either too much fuel or not enough air.
