So, I went out and got Rocksmith for the PS3. I also got a cheap electric guitar.
Never tried to play one before, neither did my fiancee . We are both really enjoying this "game" even though it is partially a guitar trainer more than a game.
Has anyone else here tried it, or is looking to give it a shot? I recommend it.

Definitely better that the Rockstar game. I have played neither but I can surmise that the Rocksmith is better because you actually get to play guitar rather than just pushing buttons, although I do know some people who would prefer the latter over the former. Plus you get to kick the walls of your home down as you noodle away on yer Flying Vee, as well!
Do they have an option for bass?
Falco.

Bass will be coming out as a downloadable option later this year.

That game looks cool. If it wasn't for the fact my game backlog is already over 100 I'd be all over it. Just polished off Mass Effect 3, next up Gears of War 3.

It is so worth playing. I am not playing any other games at all now that I have rocksmith. It is *HARD* though.
This is the one I am trying to master beginning to end (not me playing, view shown in tab mode with 6 string at bottom, I play in reverse).

Ok, so over a year on.
Rocksmith 2014 is out now, and it is awesome. Not perfect, but a huge leap up from the previous version.
It includes Bass and Guitar out of the box.
I am really enjoying rocking the bass.
So, what have I done in the past year.
Lets see... I got a serious case of GAS. I got an Epiphone Les Paul Plus top and ditched the cheap POS no-name I started with.
Then I got a nice Ibanez Bass.
Next I picked up a 12 String Acoustic Ibanez.
Then I got an Epiphone EJ200ce Acoustic (Pine Top, not laminated)
And finally, I picked up a ESP MW-600 electric because my wife is a huge Queensrÿche fan.
So, if you have any interest in Guitar or Bass, pick this new version of this "game" up. It is fantastic!

Given that I have four basses, (Yamaha five string, Hofner HI-BB, Indie acoustic and Huntington Beach acoustic) and four guitars (Yamaha classical, El Degas LP knockoff, Hofner shorty and...Gordon Deppe's Gibson Flying V), and I haven't a clue how to play, this game seems like it might be something worthwhile having. I guess maybe I should get a PS3 or summat to play it first, yes?

If you are need a town with a Target store they have some great PS3 clearance prices (getting ready for PS4 release). The Uncharted 3 250GB super slim model is on for only $124.95 (Used to be $299.99 only a few months ago).
*I have a number of new in box Phats and Slims running <3.55 firmware for those in the know...but not for $125
So is this game fun if you can already wail on an axe? Or is just for learning?

This could be what I'm looking for.
The other option is a PC but they're bulkier, and I run Linux anyway.

The game is great - be aware that there are two different versions out now. You can play on PC, Xbox or PS3. The new version also works on a Mac now.
The old version just called "Rocksmith" is pretty good - you can find it for about $10, and you also need to spring for the cable - about $10-$20.
The new version, Rocksmith 2014 is about $80. The same cable works with both games. As long as your bass or guitar has a 1/4" jack, you can use it with Rocksmith.
The new version is massively superior to the old version. You can also load all the old songs into the new version for a $10 download charge - and for the number of songs you get it is worth it.
Of late I have been working on my bass - in the new version, when you get good at a section of a song, the coloured tabs start to disappear - and eventually you are playing the whole song from memory.
If you already play, the Session Mode will blow you away. You can jam with a virtual band. Seriously, it works.
