My 92 deli exceed with 172,000 km over heated on me last week. I added coolant and kept driving. the next day It did it again in squamish. Had it towed to newport auto in squamish (opinions on this shop?) and was told a few days later the van needed a head gasket. told mechanic to go ahead and pull the head off and give me a full report on what was going on. I flew to cape hatteras for two weeks today and got an email just now telling me there is pitting and erosion on both the block and the head. told the price of repair will be more than the cost of the van. Was also told a rebuilt engine with 70-100k installed will cost me over 5,000 dollars.
5 grand seems like a tonne of money for a used engine.
What should I do?! feeling pretty overwhelmed. I live in the okanagan and the van in stuck in squamish. If i cut my losses and try to sell the van as is, what could i get for it?
-172,xxx km 1992 exceed.
-brand new battery
-turbo rebuild with CVI 2 years ago (20k since rebuild)
-deli tune
-______ 9000 shocks replaced 2 years ago.
-winters and all seasons on seperate rims, winters have 60 percent tread, summers have 80 percent.
-after market stereo w/ alpine type s 4" in the front and alpine type R 6.5" components powered by their own amp in the back and a 350 watt 10' sub in a bandpass box in the back (stereo thumps).
-custom built roof rack 8'x2' holds tonnes of gear
Van has been loved and driven. I have lived in it for the better part of three summers and I really dont want to part with it but cant afford the bill.
Any advice would be really appreciated, this forum has been an amazing asset for me in the last few years and it sucks to think i wont be a part of the deli world anymore!!
Be well and happy tuesday from north carolina,
Chris.

Used it is worth $1000-2000 is my guess you could sell the rack (NXSKI could use another one
)
$5000 for a used motor is to much installed in my opinion. I would like to see how much damage to the block deck there really is?
I would call around to few shops on here and get an estimate on a used motor installed...Your crank is good so worth few $$ and I would think the block could be saved with a new head. hard to diagnose over the internet.
But for $5000.00 I would want a brand new motor installed!!
Best of luck

looks bad, but im not an expert on what can be saved when it comes to blocks.
i'd phone coombs country auto, theyll know what to do and i think they can replace the engine for a lot less than that. they got a flat deck tow truck too.

Hey Chris,
Sorry to here about your van.
Newport knows delis but there prices are a little out of whack. Hunters down the road is a diesel shop but I don't know how well they know our rigs.
I'm in squamish so let me know if you want me to check in or arrange a tow to CVI or something. I know what a fan you are of their work.
safe travels,Matt
ps. let me know if you end up having to unload that skukem rack on her.
