I know that the L400 uses a "Box" style filter for the transmission.

Where can you pick one up? Is there a compatible Montero part? How often should this filter be replaced, and how easy is it to replace?

Also, how often should the Transmission fluid in the L400 be replaced? (All the posts on here are referring to the L300, and not the finer details of the L400 from what I can see.)

yes Montero 94 auto trans
12mm bolt drain plug
10mm pan bolts

L400 tech section buried somewhere are a few threads on auto fluid flush/changes
basically drain (measure) and fill exactly what you drained out

Hah! I used the search button and got a ton of L300 results! I switched to the great Google and got the same responses. Hence the post!

So, no need to replace the box filter then?

filter (small box/screen) with cork gasket is what comes in the kit. both should be replaced

Do you know apart number by chance? Just called NAPA and they have two distinctly different box filters. I also doubt any mechanic in my area will be able to help.

Hi Mr. Flibble,

Mardy changed my l400 tranny filter last year. Alan ( the mechanic) there told me afterwards that it had been changed before. So if you want to know the part no., you may contact mardy .

Get the one for the 3.5 v6, not the 3.0. Rock auto lists them as Wix 58884, Fram FT1105.

Perfect! I almost ordered the one for the 3.0!

Note, I just checked with the local Mitsubishi dealer about changing the filter, they said you don't need to do this provide you get a proper flush done. he was saying that no one drops the pans anymore and changes the screen filters now.

and you're going to trust a dealer? HA !

Dropping the pan is 1/2 hr of work. dooo it

Heh, good idea. At my new place there is a garage with 2 Hydraulic lifts, so I guess I have no excuse now....

Load your VIN into the Mitsubishi field in the JDM on line catalogue, which can be found in Delica FAQ Section/ Useful Links for Vehicle Part Identification Purposes. Pull up the transmission page and get the OEM number. Apart from the NAPA dealer using it to cross reference it for an after-market part, there is a chance that your model tranny is used in another North American vehicle, even sold by Mitsubishi.

No chance or guess required Paul. already posted above and in past posts(parts list)

i do have this transmission filter in stock.
pls dont do transmission flush on this old car sometime the seal go.
dont listen to mitsubishi dealer and other shop that the flush is good.
to this old car like delica sometime it works sometime it dont.
when they put the machine thru flushing the transmission fluid, it sometime
create problem on your transmission later as the seal is old.
when i change all my L400 transmission filter i do it manually to be safe transmission is expensive
and so do the labor to put it together

You know, you mentioned that link before and I never saw it until I went questing for it a second time. I also noticed that that particular FAQ link has less than 500 views as of now...

I think it should be a little more prominent as it is quite useful.

Mardy; I might have to set up an appointment to swing by for some electrical work and transmission. - I also have to get my A/C compressor replaced if you remember that it is malfunctioning. I would need an advanced appointment though as I travel on a very regular basis.
