Has anyone else done the backing plate modification to there Delica here in Canada?

I did shortly after purchasing ours, and found that the black smoke at startup and well climbing hills was reduced. I haven't been able to determine how it works for the long term since I run on waste vegetable oil.

I haven't done mine (yet). I was hoping to find out what it does to your AirCare results. Any idea? Hmmm. If you are in Power River, you probably don't have to worry much about it. I'm going to switch over to biodiesel soon so I think that mostly takes care of carbons etc. but NOx levels go up. What did you use for a plate? Make one or order one?

I blanked out the egr after waking up one day and watching a big plume of acrid diesel smoke blowing out the backside of my Delica. Solved that problem, but ideally you can just take out the egr, give it good clean and it should work fine. Too much emphasis is given on blanking it out. If you do decide to blank it out, you can cut and drill a piece of stainless steel sheet, at least 3mm thick.

Anyway I should be running on Veg oil any day now as I have finished my conversion. (under 200 dollars).

I'd like to hear more about the veg oil conversion for the Delicas, as I plan to do the same with mine. maybe lost1 or BCDelica could start a separate thread on that? some pictures as well would be most excellent

Lost1, I would love to hear how you did your WVO conversion. One day soon I would like to import a small diesel off-road toy, and of course power it with WVO.

I really want to do it on the cheap, it would make it sooooooooo much easier to justify another toy in the yard. :D

Just a quick word of warning:

Mating stainless steel and aluminium (especially cast aluminium) can often create an electrolytic reaction which causes the aluminium to break down!! I have seen this first hand on some Pajero's that had aluminium spacers in a stainless steel front bull bar. The aluminium literally crumbled into white dust!

If you add a lot of heat into the equation, this could create an even more volatile reaction and you could well end up with your EGR falling apart! :(

My suggestion: either remove the EGR and soak in petrol (do you call it gasoline??) to free up the valve, then re-fit......or fit a blanking plate that is made of a neutral property & heat resilient - like mild steel (aluminium sheet could melt under the heat stresses because it is nowhere near as thick as the cast aluminium housing).

I'm not trying to scare you or preach to you, but just commenting on what I have experienced first hand....

I did my EGR plate last weekend. The previous owner obviously knew about EGR plates as there was a piece of tin used for a plate before. It has some holes in it showing how harsh the EGR environment is.

No noticeable difference yet, but the roads here suck and I'm in 4wd most of the time.

A short cut if you don't want to do the full mod (which involves cutting and drilling plates etc) would be just to disconnect the EGR vacuum hose. This is the hose that goes to the EGR and tells it to open (it is normally closed). If you disconnect this hose (and plug it) then the EGR will never open anyways. If you have a gummed up/stuck open EGR then disconnecting the hose won't help.

The only other thing with doing this if the egr valve is weak the turbo coming on boast can push the valve open as well so removing the pipe is not the best solution also if you do remove the vacuum pipe then be sure to blank of the pipe with something as you will create an air leak so you vacuum pump will be working harder.

On my second Delica I took your advice, off the other forum, soaked my EGR in acetone, reinstalled and the results are the same as installing the Ebay plate in the other. Soon as I'm able to turn a wrench again I plan to have a look at my first backing plate; any guesses what it'll look like after 30,000 km running on mostly WVO. If it looks like Swiss cheese...........
