My front A/C is gimped and squeels like a pig from Deliverance when activated, but just wondering if I can fire up the rear AC from a back seat without the front being activated? Or are the only options NONE, FRONT, FRONT + REAR?
I have never tried any of the climate controls from the rear seat so this might be a stupid question...
On my lowly Exceed model, I have one button on my dash that switches on the front A/C condenser (if the front fan is running), and another button that switches on my rear climate control to whatever position it has been previously set to (via the controls next to the passenger armrest).
Among said rear passenger controls, there is a separate button to switch on the rear A/C condenser, so I think the short answer to your question is yes, BUT...
If memory serves me right, the van has only one compressor serving both condenser circuits; so regardless of which (or both) circuits you want to switch on, the compressor will always activate.
So if your compressor is pooched, you're SOL.
Cry "Havoc!" and let slip the elementary-school-aged boys...
Seems we have been on a similar mission to fix our A/C systems. I recently discovered a growling sound that came on when my rear A/C system was activated...or at least thats what I thought was happening.
Turned out one of the 2 fans that cools the evaporator behind the front grill was damaged. It got so bad that it kept blowing the 30 amp fuse located in the fuse block under the hood. I ended up pulling the damaged motor assembly and now it runs on one evaporator fan up front and aux unit in the rear.
Yes the rear A/C can run by itself but the front A/C switch must be in the on position. You can switch off the front blower and the rear unit will continue to pump out cool air. I tried this tonight when I fixed my system.
There is one blower motor for each Heat-A/C system so if you have blower noise but only when the A/C comes on then your issue may not be the blower at all. Falco pointed me to the L400 manuals and there is a very good A/C section in there. Helped me out big-time.....
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!
Cool thanks guys I will try the rear AC today to see if that will help keep the whale a bit cooler now that the sun has finally arrived in the Okanagan.
And Big-Bird my issue is also with one of the front condensor fans. It made such a racket I originally assumed the compressor but later traced it to the fans (not sure which one of the two). Not looking forward to removing the front end to get to it so it has remained on the backburner.
You can run the rear A/C and heat in the front if you wish to de-humidify the interior air. Put it on re-circulated air setting and do this, either heat in rear and A/C up front or vice versa to de-humidify solidly. Just a thought......
Make sure the little holes on the bottom arent pluged with dirt, take the covers off once in a while to clean out and lubricate moving parts inside the heater matrix area... also make sure the fan motors little drain hole isn't pluged with dirt as well remove the two bottom fillips screws and clean with a small stick then reverse steps to put it back... you won't have to remove the fan completley just access the lower portion of the fan gasket assembly...
There is only one ac compressor on my exceed, in order to run either front or back, this compressor needs to be running. If the compressor is the issue, neither will work.
