grinding from rear drivers side

We were driving home last night and came to a red light, upon slowing to about 25km an awful grinding sound started, it was pretty clearly from the right rear wheel area. To me it sounded like rock on metal, we pulled off the wheel on the side of the road but could not see anything out of normal. We did not have tools to take anything apart, but could not see anything out of the ordinary. when we drove home the sound went away when we went faster than 40km/hr, then when we slowed for the drive way it was back. I am planning on taking the dust cover off the brake tonight and see if there is something jammed in there, but any other ideas of what to look for would be appreciated.

probably seized caliper and/or pads worn down past the min mark.

when you pulled over, was it hotter than the other wheels/brakes ?

It was not hot so I don't think seized caliper, rotor was smooth and looked normal, brake pads looked good and were just check by a mechanic during an oil change.

Did you try going in reverse for a bit?
Simple, but has got rid of most rocks that have jumped up
into the disc for me.(if its a rock)
if no maybe a bearing?

Took the brakes apart everything looks good; pads, rotors, sliding pins... cant find a rock anywhere. the noise was still there after refitting everything, it only seems to happen when going less than 20km/h and seems worse when off the brakes, so maybe hub bearings is right but would it not seem worse when going at higher speeds? the van does not seem to be pulling to one side, there is no play when you have the wheel off the ground and the noise presented acutely with no obvious lead up. Is there another way to diagnose this, I have limited tools. Also we will be heading to Vancouver in two weeks we don't drive very much around home would it be awful to drive for about 100km to get to cvi?

certain it's coming from your wheel/brakes?

jack up rear end and rotate/check for noise. possible low/contaminated oil in rear diff.

I will check this tonight, but if it were the diff wouldn't there be noise at any speed? Same goes for everything else i can think of though too?

OK so in a parking lot make a turn at the speed that makes the noise then do the turn in the opposite direction which way is louder. When the noise occurs does it go away with the application of the E brake very slightly.

If it is the same design as the Pajero on the rear the e Brake shoes are inside the rotor and likely the culprit. You need to pull the rear rotor to see them (at least that's how I was finally able to see mine. Mine was actually the rear caliper at the back side. When I changed out the damaged rotor cailper ect. I was able to see the small shoes inside. Also the caliper I got from Rising Sun was a little tight on the shoes so I I had to drive around a bit to wear them down as I was told there was no adjustment (unusual). At any rate I would check the mini shoes if yours has them.

Will try the parking lot test and let you know... what is this testing for? We also had the rear wheels up today and on rotation the noise is only on the right/drivers side it is intermittent on rotation and may be coming from the rotor rubbing only at certain points of the rotation ie. warped rotor, is this a possible diagnosis? the noise is definitely not from the diff and the drive shaft seems solid, i did not check diff fluid as the sound was not emanating from the diff. The rotors were machined by Mardy when we bought the van in October and as earlier mentioned the pads seem to be in good condition and no signs of uneven wear on the rotor what could cause it to warp so suddenly if this is what happened?

As you are up to speed in a strait line with the noise then proceed with the turn the outer wheel will turn quicker than the other making the sounds louder or go away. Do it in both directions. Then do it while Lightly applying the brakes. If the noise goes away when the brakes are lightly applied then its most likely the pads hanging up and rubbing on the rotor. If its still there and more noticeable on a turn in either direction it could be the outside turning bearing, side gear, spider gears.

That's what the test is for

went out to attempt this test and the noise was gone, have not heard it since and all seems well. thanks for the help
