Good morning gentlemen,

I require a replacement speedometer instument cluster for my Pajero, and I'm wondering if anyone knows which vehicles have a compatible unit that I can swap in.

My vehicles details:
- A RHD 1994 Mitsubishi Pajero 2.8TD with intercooler
- Automatic transmission with 4m40, VIN starting with V46
- my current speedo uses the "mechanical" method rather than the "cable" setup on older models.
- the speedo does not have an electronic disply like many Delicas

I'm hoping someone knows if there's a Delica or Pajero model with a compatibile speedometer?
- one more thing: I've tracked down what I beleive is a compatible part from the UK, but it is in "MPH" vs "KPH"... aside from the legal situation, is there a technical reason the MPH won't work in my model?

Background:
Speedometer stopped working (ie - stays at zero kph) about a week ago. The trip meter and total mileage also stopped moving. The tachometer continued to work. As a result of the speedometer not working, the Overdrive will not kick in.
A shop suspected this may be due to the speed sensor, so he swapped in a working speed sensor from another pajero, to no avail. After putting back in my original speed sensor, we swapped in a working speedometer from another pajero and presto - everything started working. Ipso-Facto I'm now looking for a working speedo setup.
Further note: we tried to have the speedo rebuilt but after a couple failed attempts it was determined it was too burned out to work.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the montero one won't work/fit? How separated are things under the round bezels in the cluster? Worst case, you could retrofit an aftermarked electric speedometer?

As always: car-part is your friend. Lots of Montero clusters in Washington for $50-$75.

My understanding is that it needs to be from a model that is 2.8TD, but that may not be the case. I'm looking for someone who's possibly done the work in the past to let me know what trial and error has shown them...

I don't beleive the individual components of the speedo are all that independant, the wiring cluster as well as indiv. comp. are pretty intermingled back there. I don't think an aftermarket speedo would correct whatever flaw is causing the O/D not to kick in. (the wiring in the unit itself is quite fried)

Speedometer shouldn't affect OD (as long as the transmission speed sensor is working properly). Your OD switch may be acting up.

Just doing a google image search for a 1994 Montero vs. a 1994 Pajero, the clusters look almost identical. Based on my experience with other manufacturers, it's very likely that they connect up the same as well. You're basically balancing risk and reward: an ebay cluster from the UK will definitely work, being RHD, but will cost a bunch, and you'll never return it if it's broken. A Montero cluster will very likely work (though it may be a few kph off depending on final drive ratios), but you could probably buy 3 for the price of the uk one.

To minimize your risk, remove your stock cluster, head to a scrap yard that has the monty cluster, and compare them side by side. If connectors and mounting holes are the same, they'll swap. If not, import one from uk/japan/one of the bc dealers who can work yahoo auctions japan.

Great advice on the Montero route... I've done the image search as well and now just need to see the back to make sure everything marries up. I may go down to WA state to check some yards.

About the O/D... it is in fact due to the faulty speedo. When a working speedo was borrowed from a working pajero, everything worked - including O/D.

Yes I've got Rocky Mountain working on tracking an international one for me as well - any other dealer suggestions?
