Central locking module location and repair

A while ago I had a sticky drivers door lock so I installed a modern lock actuator. Good instructions are here: http://imageevent.com/russpix/photos/ce ... conversion It locked with authority!

Then about a month ago the doors stopped locking with either the key fob or the drivers side switch. The doors would, however unlock with the switch or remote. An unhappy clicking sound was coming from the central door lock module above the drivers left foot. I set out to remove and examine it.

I removed the four screws holding the trim piece below the steering wheel and dropped it down. There is no need to remove the fuel filler door latch. The module is the top rectangular box in the centre of this picture.

It's a bit tricky to pull out as there are tiny plastic tabs that you can't disengage. A gentle prying with a flat bladed screwdriver between the module and the base worked for me.

Here is the module removed.

You can get the cover off with your fingernail revealing the circuit board and two relays and a chip.

There was a tiny burn mark on one of the traces on the circuit board. A friend soldered a tiny wire on for me and it works again.

I think the reason it burned out was because I did not disconnect the original lock motor after wiring in the new actuator. With both operating in parallel it was too much for the module. I have since cut the wires to the original motor.

So if you wire in a new actuator do not leave the old motor hooked up. That's your tip of the week. :M
