help please! wiper arm removal

Hi all,
I wanted to take off my wiper arms in order to do a little rust removal and repaint it. I lifted the rubber cover at the base of the arm and started to loosen off the nut. It got loose and turned and turned but didn't let go. So I decide to tighten it back on again but it wouldn't catch on the thread again. Now it's all loose and I'm stuck on how to take it off like I wanted or put it back on again. Has anyone tried to pull off their wiper arms that can shed a little light on the subject. I tried looking for a exploded view of all the workings but only found L400 and no luck on Mdoc or delicaclub.

Hi Fozzie,
The cap that is over the hub should just lift up on it's hinge. Under that is a (I think) 12mm nut, remove that. Then you lift the arm off the spline, making careful note of it's placement for convenience of proper replacement once you've repainted it. Let us know how it turns out... smiles.

P.S.: Having read your post a little more thoroughly ~ the wiper arm has likely been in place for a long time and might be a little sticky. Perhaps give it a little WD40, let it sit then carefully lever it with a slot screwdriver. One other point: the arm is going to be spring loaded, try lifting the arm into the "off windscreen" mode so it's not working against you. FC.

Is this in regards to the front, or the rear wiper? I'm trying to get the rear wiper arm of without much luck, and I want to be sure I'm prying on the right part. I think my splines are stripped because I can hear the motor working but the arm doesn't move.

It will take some penetrating oil and pump pliers. I rigged the pliers with one end on the shaft of the bolt and the other under the wiper arm part that fits over the bolt. Give it a squeeeeeez.. Just like a ball joint puller. It will pop off. Don't just pull hard on the wiper.. its not a good idea as the bolt is the shaft of the motor and you don't want to yank on that too hard. And listen to Falco. You need to note your wiper position so you have the correct angle when you re install. I did this and painted.. simple yet awesome results. Looks mucho better. I painted then baked int he oven and it did a hard finish that has yet to chip.

Success. Thanks. The inside of the "socket" of the wiper arm had been completely smoothed out. I "cut" some new splines into it with a utility knife and then filled it with threadlocker before putting it back on. Seems to have worked.

These 3 wipers usually come off fairly easy with some rocking back and forth. The spline is tapered away from the panel so it gets easier as you rock and pull it towards you. It's usually better to leave the 12mm nut on a couple of turns so the wiper doesn't hit you in the face when it comes off. Then you can remove it and adjust the larger nut to tighten the assembly up against the panel. A loose wiper on the driver's side drove me nuts until I got this tip from Nathan at RJD Services, only after unsuccessfully looking all over for a puller tool that would fit.
A little WD40 probably helps if you can get it in there and let it sit for a few minutes, but I didn't even need that. Just a few rocks back and forth while pulling did the trick. It is good to mark the wiper position first so you get the same orientation when putting it back on.
