anyone find a referance for the glow plugs? I found 4 dead ones in my Delica and I am supposed to be leaving for Mexico with it in a few days...

I made the assumption that you have a '90-'91 with 4D56T engine.

My Brother was a service manager for VW and when I mentioned your problem, he also suggested checking the glowplug relay.

I've seen several glow plug circuit problems due to high resistance in the wiring and connections [usually from corrosion]. 15 year old vehicles from coastal environs are a prime candidiate for high resistance corrosion gremlins.Try cleaning all the connectors with a pencil eraser and smearing a little copper never seize on them. Does the system have a temperature overide switched through the engine coolant?

It does seem unlikely that all four would fail at the same time

i took each glow plug out and grounded the housing on the - battery terminal, while connecting the top of the glow plug to the + battery terminal. No heat no nothing. I assume that all 4 are dead. I have tried several of the parts dealers here and the only reference they can come up with is NGK Y-733-J. And they are unable to order it.

This is bad news as I am supposed to leave tomorrow with my Delica to Mexico. It is -10C outside and startup isn't possible.

Have you measured the resistance of the glowplugs?, should be something between 0,25 - 1,0 ohms

Delica glow plugs systems work on a 6.5v circuit and if you connect them to the battery it will burn them out instantly . The correct part number for NGK glow plugs is 2161 . I have four in stock if anyone needs them .

I just had a look in the Pajero factory manual for the 4D56T I'm assuming this is the same for the Delica as it is the same engine.

The troubleshooting flow chart shows 9-11 volts at the plugs immediatly after switching the key on.

After 4 to 8 seconds the voltage drops to 0.

While the engine is cranking the reading at the plugs should be 6 volts.

While the engine is warming up, the plugs recieve 12 to 15 volts from the charging circuit for 3 minutes or until the coolant temperature reaches 60 C.

I have not had too much to do with Pajero`s yet and I am not fully aware of how the glow plug system works on one of those but if you pull out one of the glow plugs on your Delica and check the numbers on the glow plug itself it quite clearly states 6V . I have heard of other people trying to diagnose glow plug problems on other JDM vehicles with 6V system and the plugs blow when connected to a 12V battery . I took the time to remove the glow plugs and cross the part numbers to the 6V NGK 2161 glow plugs . Lordco have lots in stock but pricey at $65 retail . I am selling at $52 each and keep at least four in stock at all times .

The MD 050212 is a 12 volt plug with a silver top but it is only used in model years after 93

The MD 092392 is 6.2 volts and has a green top.

Apparently mitsubishi saw fit to do away with the step down transformer in thier glow plug control module fourteen years ago.

I cannot find any manufacturers other than NGK for thier Y115R-1. I'm guessing you can buy the exact same plug in a MMC box.

Do your NGKs have a green top?

I have just had four more Delicas arrive from Japan and on one of them the glow plugs are not working . After removal I have found them to be green top but clearly marked 12v . I am still trying to work out when they changed from 6 to 12v but this particular van is a late `91 model and definately has a full 12v system . Also has 16" rims and custom exhaust , modified turbo , rear spoiler and goes way quicker than the stock vans I have . May have to drive this one for a while and maybe even run out to the owners meet being planned !!!!

Hi, cc auto, i been dealing with delica for long time if you see green color on the top edge of the glow plug , it should be 6.2 volt original replacement like NGk only 6 volt.you can buy this to local dealer mitsu give the parts # i post for delica 6.2 volts with green tip color on it. if you recieved the delica with 11 volts on it maybe they change it in japan from a previous owner but beware 11 volts as for i know only uses on pajero & newest model delica 1994 with 2.8 liter on it.4M40 engine not 4D56, but new pajero V44 & V24 i did see uses 11 volts. its just how this mitsubishi works for them. also always check the continuity of each glow plug if there is no continuity the glow plug is burn.willing to help you if you need more info. keep in touch hope this will help you
