Cool/Hot Box - revisited

Hi,

I've reviewed the previous posts concerning this topic, but didn't find the info I was looking for...

I'm wondering if my coolbox is operating correctly. The AC works, keeps the cabin cool; however, the Cold Box only gets intermittent blasts of cool air from the AC (along with what seems to be an extra load on the AC system - a drop in pitch). With the box set to cold, this continues indefinitely; ie., the intermittent cooling action.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jamie

Used my coolbox to make ice on my trip across canada this summer. I got some mini icepacks that fit the freezer compartment. Probably froze 2-3 pacs a day to keep in my picnic cooler. Never noticed any change in pitch when I was using it. I only use it when I'm driving so thers the road noise and tunes too.
I would rather have the legroom than the coolbox but my van came with it and I would have to drain my AC to remove it then get a conversion kit to recharge to get cool air again. So I'm keepi it for now.

A little note -i find the coolbox very usefull on trips works great hot or cold .-look inside there should be a little compartment on the left side that slides up and inside is a little ice tray... cheers

Try removing the plastic panel where the ice cube tray is hidden on the left side and take your shop vac to it. It worked for me.

Is there a replacement or drop-in for the A/C system? I'm thinking with the coolant being nearly 20 years old, it is probably the 'old' freon or 'bad' freon, so most shops nowadays won't have that same kind of refrigerant. Anybody know?

can't they just change the freon to the new stuff? or is it a totaly different system?

I think I answered my own question.

but it looks like if there is an issue it is likely a leak if I read that right but also freon is still available for the older systems till 2020.

Apparently you can change to the newer enviro friendly gas if you change a couple valves inside the system. It has to do with the molecule size of the gas. I called a random air conditioning specialist out of the yellow pages last year when I was thinking of getting rid of my coolbox. I have since decided to keep my cooler and my AC is pretty cold so I never followed up on it.
