cool start problems

There's so much information and opinion regarding cold start problems that I hesitate to throw anything else onto the fire but...

My 96 L400 starts perfectly in cold weather (say anything below minus 8 degrees) and warm weather (anything above 12 degrees) but not in between. While it always starts instantly, within that cool temperature range it sputters and stalls within 5 - 10 seconds. It usually takes 2 more starts to get it idling smoothly, then it runs perfectly. Any suggestions?

Sounds a lot like the injector pump front seal is leaking. Is there any smoke when it does start?

No smoke. IP seal replaced at purchase 30,000km ago. If that's the cause why does it start so well at very cold temps?

Is it possible your sensor is off? When its warm its not a biggie. When its cold the sensor works. In between its iffy and doesnt give the proper response for the glow plugs / relay. It shouldn't be expensive to get a new sensor.

Worth a try

Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds appropriate, but what sensor?
