What is the normal amount of exhaust smoke to see on a cold start ?

None, mine only smokes on cold starts if I step too hard on the accelerator pedal. Before I had my injectors cleaned and replace my glow plugs it would billow smoke though.

I get a little toot on start-up. Just a little puff and then it is good, but I spray soot into a nice patch on the driveway while it is warming up.

I used to get clouds of white smoke when starting after several attempts in cold weather.

After getting RSI to do their cold start tune (11V Hyundai glow plugs, etc.) I get quick, easy starts and no smoke.

What color is the smoke you are getting?

White and has a slight sweet smell = coolant
Blue=oil
Black=unburned fuel

Depending on the color it will determine where you need to focus your attention.

At most, one little white puff (at least down to -15, Southern Ontario doesn't get much colder). If it's below 0, I do find I need to let it idle for 30 seconds or so, or it will fart a little when you step on the accelerator.

I also find my soot puddle has been reduced since I put in the new glow plugs/blocked EGR.

Mine is the same a this...little toot and then a baconstrip of black soot on the ground.

I also get a fair amount of black out the back under even light acceleration until coolant temp gauge is pretty much up to normal operating temp, then nothing even if I giv'er eh.

I get about a 5 second belch of unburnt fuel , only on cold starts . It starts with no problem at all . Any thoughts ?

I was thinking back in the late fall when my Deli started to puff unburnt fuel....I didn't give it much thought as it started fine. It did this until the temps really dropped to -15 and lower and then it refused to start as easily. I wonder if the glow plugs were giving signs of imminent failure or weakness back in the fall....Short story is 2 plugs failed and 2 were weak when I finally tested them over the xmas holiday. New plugs went in and now I have zero smoke.

I get a little puff the instant the motor catches - cold or hot. No soot on the driveway though.
