How are the 1998 models in quality/features?

So, I have had my L300 Super Exceed Crystal Roof baby for 4.5 years, and she has been (and still is) awesome. She is 1991, and I got her with about 56,000 km, which I have about doubled by now. Still awesome condition and all, with wonderful and very regular care-taking by Butch of CVI.
I noticed that I am beginning to eye the new models these days (the L400, shorter ones), and am thinking about upgrading. I believe I can bring in something of 1998, and wonder about their quality and features in general - known problems to be aware of, new features, etc. For instance, I would love to be able to (finally) accelerate when going uphill

- does the 2.8 engine make a difference?

If you can get over the looks, the L400 will provide you with much more power!

Yep, much more power from an L400. If you're looking at the series 2 model there's a bit more even. The downside is it was achieved by using a partly electronic fuel pump which is unreliable and expensive to repair. Other than that both versions are almost identical bar the cosmetic changes to the front end. Both use the 4M40 engine which will crack its head just as readily as the 4D56.
Bank on replacing the fuel pump seal and expansion tank. Later models don't seem to suffer from timing chain problems as much as the 94-95 models. There's a few other common issues, but nothing too major.
Excellent running gear, the Super Select 4x4 system is great, auto box pretty bomb-proof too.

Don't forget the 4 wheel disc brakes, 2 piston front and single rear. great stopping power but with unforgiving calipers that still seize up.
Also quieter ride, rear coils and the 6 cyl gas engine too if you like to live on the dark side. I do like the new front end cosmetics, though a few will beg to differ. Ha Ha
You'll enjoy whatever you purchase, all great vehicles.

Yeah, I reckon if I lived in a country with nice cheap petrol like you guys I'd go for the series 2 V6. Change the water pump, timing belt, HT leads and put long-life plugs in (all the nasty jobs) and good to go I should think.

I've been driving my series two for a couple months. I'm enjoying it a lot. Keep in mind the swb has less room than the l300.
Lots of power and excellent handling. The diesel pulls really nice. It's like driving a delica with a gas motor pretty much.

Thank you all for your replies and perspectives. Definitely convincing, and I actually do like the new look. The only unfortunate thing is that my dog won't have a slide window to stick his head out (I actually switched the windows on my current one to sliding ones just for that).
Anyone looking for a L300 in an awesome condition?
