My second cousins friend has an 1995 L400 and is having stalling issues. She took it to Japanoid and was quoted $1200 in parts and $600 in labour to fix the problem. I know injector pumps aren't cheap, but this seems high to me. I've told her to call CVI and possible RJD and Werner's as well, but thought I would put it out to the forum as well (I couldn't find answers in my searches). How much should a rebuild and installation of an L400 injector pump cost?

Here are the emails sent (sorry, it was a previous Japanoid employee, I misread my email)...

"Yes it is expensive. It's because the Fuel pump is like a human brain for a Diesel Engine Vehicle.
It is the most important part for good running.

It also is a 6 hour labor job, so if I order from a cheap over haul shop (chinese one) and
if they made a mistake in the overhaul and we have to charge extra labor to customer.
It's because they (chinese shop) doesn't have warranty for their parts.

Here is price for a chinese shop below.

$ 670 ~ $840

I saw many customers who tried to fix their fuel pump themselves and few customers came back again for the same problem.
Japanoid always has this issue because customers return with the same issue and they have to argue it out with the chinese shop
regarding their overhaul job. It does end up being a bit of a mess.

My over haul shop is a specialized diesel shop for heavy duty machines and commercial truck.
They have warranty for 1year or 15000km.

So are my suggestions for this issue.

1, We will try to replace "FUEL HAND PUMP" first and will see after that. (This is my mechanic recommend )
2, We will replace "FUEL HAND PUMP"+"chinese over haul" .
3, We will look for new delica (Electric fuel pump one)from japan and we can trade-in your vehicle.
4. We will replace "FUEL HAND PUMP"+"specialized over haul"

if you interested in #3 then I can give you more detail for vehicles and price.

I had my ip pump done through RSI and installed by Jason. (Manitobadeli since I'm in Saskatoon)
Didn't have any issues at all, and would recommend them if I needed further work or a friend required the same service.

Well, I told her to add a bottle of "Engine Oil Stop Leak" and 1/3L of 2 stroke oil to her tank. So far she hasn't had the stalling issue which was hapenning about 6 times a day before. Hopefully this solution will hold.

CVI has just fixed this for me. Considerably cheaper too.

This is a common problem re oil making its way into ip causing injector issues.

By far the commonest issue is the fuel pump front seal failing. Typical symptoms are difficulty starting and stalling shortly after starting. Often once restarted and warmed up the problem goes away for the rest of the day.
In extreme cases it's possible for the fuel to enter the engine oil in quantity and cause a runaway destroying the engine.
The seal itself is very cheap and it shouldn't take a professional more than 3 hours to change. Further pump work isn't usually necessary.

IF you need a last minute part, I consider Japanoid but still usually try to hold off due to their pricing. Otherwise I would run and get your work done by another shop.

Also, instead of the oil stop leak in the tank, a jug of canola oil goes a long way and has helped some. I don't trust any stop leak products as they can cause more trouble down the road.

Good luck though, not a cheap repair no matter how you tackle it!

I did mention the Canola oil as well, but she was having trouble wrapping her mind around putting anything into the tank other than Diesel and wanted me to just list things she could buy from Canadian Tire. She added the stop leak and 1/3L 2 stroke oil to a full tank so I don't have any concerns about it causing problems. I've also read through many threads on here and the UK site talking about the stop leak fixing their problems. I've also told her to add a fuel additive with each fill. Hopefully this fix lasts for a while, if not, davidwwc has informed me of a friend who can re-build the IP, and RSI is much cheaper than Japanoid. I make sure everyone steers clear of them since their prices are outrageous (in some cases, 4x as much as other shops)!

Happy it worked out for her and others. Just my personal prejudice against stop leak I guess!


The ironic (moronic) thing is that I had to visit Japanoid for a piece of their parts pajero today... I get the impression that I am blacklisted there :) Was still civil and got what I needed though. Not sure if they read the forum. They sure have downsized though..
