I had the IP rebuilt at CVI. And since then we have had the worst mileage in the 5 years we've had her. The one thing noticeably different is that every time I start it(even when at full operating temp) it takes about twice as long to catch, and it is accompanied by a puff of white smoke(smells like raw diesel) butch checked the glow plugs, said they are good. And he also said the puff was normal, but I have never had anything other than a small puff of black up until the rebuild(other than the brutal cold starts which led to the rebuild) any ideas would be appreciated.
FYI, 340ish kms to a tank...450-500 per tank before.
Brad.

When we did my ip in the l300 we didn't set the timing quite right. It had a puff of white stuff until warm. Seemed like it could be an injector but we checked the timing with a new diesel sender unit for the timing tool and found we were slightly off. One other symptom was the vacuum reading was strange. Seemed to jump up in boost fast on the vacuum gauge. Crappy fuel mileage as well.
After the fix it ran great.

The pump wasn't calibrated properly. Ask how they set the timing, as it is very involved, and requires some impressive equipment which I know they didn't have at their shop last I was there... Butch/Edwin are nice guys, but some things aren't based soley on mechanical ability, or the willingness to try...

We knew that for mine. The unit for the timing was malfunctioning and had to wait for a new one is all. It wasn't a lack of proper mechanical skill or tool know how. I put this up as a possible reason for his deli symptoms.

I had mine rebuilt there a swell hoping it would start and burn cleaner(Black smoke), didn't really help with either much, have since replaced the injectors and that did help make it burn a bit cleaner but I think my timing must be off yet...can most big diesel repair shops do a job like this? we have lots of diesel shops in PG some that repair heavy equipment that us the 4M40...

Any shop set up to do "complete" rebuilds on diesel injection pumps will have the proper calibration equipment to do the job properly. Also be aware that the injectors require balancing as well.

Hi Brad,
380 kms on a full tank definitely doesn't sound right after an IP service. As I've mentioned this to you, we found quite a bit of oil dilution inside your IP which causes the engine to stall especially after a morning cold start.
We stand by our workmanship. Should you feel that a job was not done to your satisfaction, we will honor any issues that relate to what was recently done. All you need to do is call and let us know.
Cheers!

Got her back to Butch, they advanced the IP timing a hair and there is no more white smoke that I can see!

starts quicker too!
Thank you Butch, truly great customer service! You have earned at least one more loyal customer.
Brad.

For those unaware of injector balancing like myself, a brief definition from
http://www.jaguarfuelinjectorservice.com/
IN THE TRUE DEFINITION OF INJECTOR BALANCING...
MORE INJECTORS (OF THE SAME PART NUMBER) THAT ARE FITTED ON THE ENGINE, ARE SEND FOR FLOW TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING. FOR EXAMPLE...IF THE ENGINE IS FITTED WITH SIX INJECTORS...THEN PERHAPS EIGHT, NINE OR TEN INJECTORS ARE SENT IN FOR TESTING. ALL OF THE INJECTORS ARE TESTED AND CLEANED, AND THEN, THE TESTER SELECTS SIX INJECTORS WHICH PROVIDE THE LEAST STANDARD DEVIATION OF FLOW RATE...(SELECTING SIX INJECTORS WHICH HAVE THE CLOSEST FLOW RATES...IE...MATCHING THE FLOW RATES), AND THE REMAINING INJECTORS ARE RETURNED TO THE OWNER AS SPARES. FLOW RATE STANDARD DEVIATION IS EXPLAINED
IN MOST CASES, FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WITH A DAILY DRIVER VEHICLE, INJECTOR BALANCING IS NOT NECESSARY. IF THE TESTING AND ULTRASONIC CLEANING PROCESS PUTS YOUR INJECTORS WITHIN 3 CC STANDARD DEVIATION (OR LESS), THEN YOUR INJECTORS ARE GOOD TO BE REFITTED IN YOUR ENGINE.
IF HOWEVER, YOU WANT THE MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FROM YOUR ENGINE (YOU ARE RACING THE VEHICLE, OR AN ENGINE PURIST), THEN PERHAPS INJECTOR BALANCING IS RIGHT FOR YOU. IF TESTING AND CLEANING YOUR ORIGINAL SIX INJECTORS DOES NOT RESULT IN THE SIX ENGINE FITTED INJECTORS PROVIDING A STANDARD DEVIATION OF 1 TO 3 CC DEVIATION, BUT TESTING THE SIX ORIGINAL INJECTORS, PLUS THE OTHERS SENT IN FOR CLEANING AND TESTING, AND THEN AGAIN SELECTING A SET OF SIX INJECTORS, THAT PROVIDE A STANDARD DEVIATION OF LESS THAN 1 CC DEVIATION, THEN INJECTOR BALANCING IS THE WAY TO GO.

Cut and paste, that's how it was posted.
Not really a concern, first world problems for you I guess!

White smoke is back, both at initial start up and through out the day after warm up(glow plugs off) does anyone know how to adjust the timing? It went away after a re adjustment adjustment by CVI, but It has started up again. If I can avoid taking more time off work to get into Richmond it would be great.
Brad.

I would like to know as well, as my post IP build experience has left me with cold start hesitation and white smoke.
Again, never had these challenges prior to the IP rebuild.
Cheers,
Joe

And I am only experiencing 350-380Kms per tank
